This song is not exactly "about" this passage from the book, but while writing the lyrics I was reminded of these potent words and decided to lean into that, giving the song its title.

This is what I've come to call my "drone pop" song. It began years ago as an experiment with layering loops and rhythms, which grew and deepened until technical and personal difficulties caused me to shelve it indefinitely. However the song stuck with me during those years away, and I began playing it live in an altered form with only keyboard and vocals. In performances of this version I began to sing the "key to the kingdom" refrain after the first verse, inspired by Animal Collective's use of those lyrics (which appear in a number of traditional blues/gospel songs) in a live rendition of their song "The Purple Bottle." I never planned to include them in the final recording but liked the way it built the energy, and when the time finally came to resuscitate and finish that old mix it had become such a part of the song that it seemed right to leave it in. It was a surreal moment when, after having sung it this way numerous times, I first listened to the 1929 recording "I've Got the Key to the Kingdom" by Washington Phillips, that contains the lyrics "Daniel had the key to the kingdom and the devil couldn't do him no harm."

It's been a long journey to finish this one. At this time it is the oldest song of mine that I still feel called to record and release. Thus it seems appropriate for it to be the first new vocal music I've released online since closing the door on my old project, Crow Quilled Confessions, in 2017. Numerous songs have come out of me in the tumultuous changes since then, many of which will see the light of day in the months and years to come. Thank you for listening, reading, and being here.
