Makes No Difference has been sitting around waiting to be finished for a few months.  I just got around to writing some typically cryptic lyrics that don't say much of any thing but feel insightful :).  Em kicks this one into high gear and the band hits a slow groove that features my guitar work.  Overall, a very nice bluesy track.  We hope you like this little ditty. The title, Just a Little Taste of Your Love, pretty much says it all.  A straight ahead rock song with all the basic Stonesy elements.  The vocals kick it into high gear!  Songs been sitting in the vault for a year or so and we finally got around to ditching my vox and let a real singer belt it.  We hope you like this little ditty. The great french director François Truffaut once said in an interview back in the 60s that making a film is very easy - all you need is gun and a girl. It always sounded like a song title to me, so here is a Dylan / Elvis Costello / Tarantino / folk jazz / murder ballad mashup inspired by his simple truism.

Our Time In the Sun started life as a collaboration between Jackie Irving and myself and I will always be indebted to her for her efforts.  However, I never really liked the arrangement or the timing around the delivery of the vocals, so we've crafted new lyrics and a new melody line and re-recorded the instrumental track.  In this reimagining, we have kept the piano line that gave the song its' hook.  We hope you like this new adventure and ask that you hit the like button if you do. Thanks for having a listen. Running Out of Time is another one of those songs that started life as my composition, was given new lyrics by Jackie Irving, and is now returned to the original lyrics in this re-thinking of this very sad, melancholy song. Reprising our Joan'n'Bob act ( see Diamonds and Rust Gareth-calway – Diamonds-and-rust) with a return fixture, Bob's trademark protest song against one of his early women. His second album but the first to feature a more or less complete sweep of his own songs, unlike the first which mainly showcased him as a performer of other people's. In other words, the real Dylan. Who was the discarded lover? Some internal evidence suggests this may even be pre-New York with its rustic setting of roosters and dark roads and sense of setting out and travelling' on in which case it might be a memory of some Mid Western affair rather than Suzi Rotolo but who knows. "You just kinda wasted my precious time" is pretty damning but mild compared to some of his later accusations and restless attacks on whoever was upsetting him at the time. We both bought this album about 8 years after it came out probably on the strength of Blowing in the Wind as one of those must have vinyl classic albums from one of the masters of folk rock and Americana and fellow architect of the 60s (with the Beatles) first heard as children but now understood as teenagers and were sent back to it recently by the brilliant film about Dylan's early years (up to 1966) 'A Complete Unknown' which ends with him roaring away from Pete Seeger type folk on a rocknroll motorbike. Around the time of Hendrix there was a rumour that Dylan couldn't really play guitar but made up for it with a unique dramatising voice and the poetry of the lyrics but one listen to the original will banish that thought: his guitar picking (honed by all those folk club performances) is astonishingly good and drives the song.. And contrary to most people's recall, this is not a solo track but has a band behind him playing drums, two bass guitars, piano and a second guitarist. Our version concentrates on the heart-yearning pretty tune. We have a female lead vocal, bass, percussion and add some vocal layers. On the liner notes Dylan protests that it isn't a (slow and easy going) love song. And so of course that's exactly the way we do it.

Let’s not mince words here. Trump is the embodiment of corruption, greed, and incompetence. He’s a man who has spent his entire life looking out for himself, exploiting others, and leaving chaos in his wake. As De Niro so eloquently put it: *“He’s a dog. He’s a pig. He’s a con. He’s a bullsh*t artist. He’s a mutt who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”* This isn’t just about politics—it’s about morality. It’s about standing up to a man who has no respect for the rule of law, no respect for the truth, and no respect for the American people.  

Trump’s presidency was a disaster. He divided the country, emboldened hate, and failed to deliver on his promises. He’s a man who thrives on chaos, who lies with every breath, and who cares only about his own ego. As De Niro said: *“He’s a punk, he’s a dog, he’s a mutt. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s an idiot. He’s a fool.”* And yet, here we are, facing the possibility of him returning to power. We cannot let that happen. We cannot allow this man to continue to poison our democracy.  

This is not just about Trump—it’s about the people who enable him. The sycophants, the cowards, and the opportunists who stand by his side and allow his corruption to flourish. They are just as guilty as he is. As De Niro said: *“They’re all scum. They’re all mutts. They don’t know what they’re talking about.”* We need to hold them accountable. We need to stand up and fight back.  

The stakes are too high to sit on the sidelines. This is about the soul of our nation. It’s about protecting our democracy, our values, and our future. We cannot afford to let Trump and his enablers win. We must vote, we must organize, and we must make our voices heard. As De Niro said: *“We’re gonna fight back. We’re gonna fight back with everything we’ve got.”*  

So let’s do this. Let’s come together and defeat Trump once and for all. Let’s show the world that we are better than this. That we will not tolerate corruption, lies, and hate. That we will stand up for what’s right. As De Niro said: *“We’re gonna win. We’re gonna win because we have to.”*  

This is our moment. This is our fight. Let’s get to work.

I'm a Brit in America.

I used to write songs for other artists and thought that getting covers was what it was all about. Whenever I heard the end results of what other artists, producers or A&R people would do with my songs, I mostly found it soul destroying, so I allowed myself to I get distracted developing technology - inventing the Stepp digital guitar and founding several startups in mobile and healthcare.  Then about twelve years ago I started writing again and this time I wrote for myself and rediscovered my passion. So here I am, a songwriter again. 

I record on a MacBook Pro using Logic Pro X, and play a Fender Jazzmaster (my current go-to), American Fender Tele, Taylor acoustic, Epiphone Sheraton II Pro, Fender Jazz Bass, Line 6 Variax JTV, Stepp DG1 (of course!), Nord Piano 5/MIDI keyboard, Gretsch Lap Steel and am learning pedal steel on a Sho-Bud Pro pedal steel guitar. 

The Soundcloud community has fostered my motivation for songwriting and music discovery. Thanks for listening - every comment, constructive or otherwise inspires me.

There was once a renowned Italian Renaissance sculptor who was asked by a bishop viewing one of his pieces how he had known there was such a beautiful lion contained within that massive, misshapen piece of stone he'd been given ? The artist replied that he simply knocked off everything that didn't look like a lion... I love this metaphor, as I believe it says all you need to know about the learning curve of life. In order to acheive our creative and worldly ambitions we have no choice but to keep relentlessly banging away a little each day (“no, not like that, that’s not a lion…no, that’s not a lion either…) until at some point, by default of the thing you are making being a little closer to representing what it is you were trying to express than it was the day before, you actually might find yourself one day with something of real artistic merit in your hands. I think I have spent my life being so blown away by the art and music of others - all those damn beautiful lions out there - how could I not be tempted to spend a little time whilst on this mortal coil banging a few rocks together myself on the off-chance there might be some plausible lion of my own out there waiting to be revealed ? Hello, and thank you for taking the time to listen.  
My name is Johnny, a lifelong musician and songwriter whose work is deeply rooted in the pursuit of justice, equality, and meaningful change. For as long as I can remember, music has been my voice, my weapon, and my sanctuary—a way to channel the frustrations, hopes, and dreams of a world in turmoil.  

My songs are a reflection of the turbulent times in which we live. They are anthems for the marginalized, the oppressed, and the forgotten—those who bear the weight of systemic inequality, poverty, and injustice. Through my music, I aim to amplify the voices of minorities, the poor, the sick, and the downtrodden, shining a light on the struggles they endure in a society that often turns a blind eye.  

At the heart of my work is a call to resist the oppressive grip of the billionaire class, whose unchecked power and greed have eroded the foundations of our democracy. My lyrics are a rallying cry, urging listeners to awaken to the realities of our world, to challenge the status quo, and to fight for a future where equity and justice are not just ideals, but realities.  

But my music is not just a critique of what is wrong—it is also a beacon of hope. I strive to inspire others to join the fight, to look in the mirror and confront the uncomfortable truths of our nation’s bloody history. Only by acknowledging the past can we begin to heal and move forward. My songs are a tribute to the dreamers and the activists who came before us, and a call to carry their torch into the future.  

Above all, I seek to honor the vision of John Lennon and countless others who dared to imagine a world of peace, love, and unity. Through my music, I hope to contribute to that vision.

Over a 40 year span, I have written a countless number of songs, alone or in collaboration with others.  Here, you will find the product of those efforts with many songs recently re-recorded.  Frequently, earlier versions live here as well. All songs were written by me (RC Sterling) unless otherwise noted.  While several singers contribute to what you hear, the most common element across the material is a commitment to crafting catchy pop/rock/alternative tunes. In some instances AI programs have been used to isolate older vocal tracks when the original audio files could not be found.  All tracks have been auto tuned and pitch corrected as needed. Unfortunately, nothing could help those demos that featured my lead vocals. 😁
