This record is a Southern satire and modern outlaw sequel to “Goodbye Earl” by The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks) — a tongue-in-cheek nod to what happens when small-town justice meets modern dating apps and vape clouds.
Where Earl was a wink at domestic revenge through fried food and friendship, “Sarah Had to Go” moves the story into the 2025 backroads of America — where revenge gets wrapped in Apple charger cords, Swift lyrics, and teacher-aesthetic vengeance. It’s FatMatt’s salute to the kind of women who take their heartbreak and turn it into a headline, equal parts hilarious, dangerous, and divine.
The track honors Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Strayer — the original queens of country rebellion — by keeping that same fearless humor, no-apology storytelling, and righteous female fire that made “Goodbye Earl” an anthem. Instead of bluegrass murder ballad twang, this version rides a trap-country bounce with chrome guitars, dirt-road bass, and gospel-choir echoes.
It’s satire, but it’s also real.
A love letter to bold women, dark humor, and American truth-telling — where the moral isn’t “she killed him,” it’s “she took her power back.”
