“Back to Black” is a deeply personal reflection released around Father’s Day in Spain, a moment that pushed me to really look at myself not just as an artist, but as a father and as a man shaped by his past. This track comes from that exact mindset, looking back at who I was as a child while at the same time looking down at my own kid and noticing the similarities, the patterns, and the way personality and behavior carry forward.

The song is built around those connections. It touches on psychology, upbringing, and the relationship between how you were raised and how you raise your own child. There is a real sense of karma and reflection in that process, especially when you start recognizing traits in your child that mirror your younger self.

In the first verse, I go through the lessons my mother gave me growing up. The things she repeated over and over about how to behave in public, how to treat women, how to be responsible, and how important it is to be present as a father one day. Those lessons were not just guidance, they were standards that stayed with me.

The second verse turns inward. It is more reflective and more honest. It is not only about what I was taught, but how those lessons and the way I was treated actually affected me. How it shaped my emotional stability, my confidence, and the way I see myself today. It connects directly to the goals I chase and the reasons behind them, and how all of that ties back to my self image.

The chorus repeats “I hope they don’t call me next.” That line comes from a place of uncertainty and pressure. It can feel like fear of being judged, fear of being exposed, or even fear of not living up to the expectations that were set for me. It could be about judgment from a higher power, or just the internal pressure of wondering if I really became the man I was raised to be. It reflects that tension between the lessons I carry and the reality of who I am today as a father.

The sound of the track leans into a soulful and melodic space, inspired by that introspective style associated with Earl and mixed with elements that feel close to R&B and even Motown. When recording this, I had Amy Winehouse on my mind, which adds another layer to the tone and emotion behind the song.
