A warm late Spring evening at Middle Farm. A hazy light has descended over the dirt track running alongside the Carrickalinga Creek. On my way to this location I had encountered a huge Red Belly Blacksnake sunning itself on the hardened earth. Having almost not seen it up until I came to a halt about a metre from it, it regarded my presence casually before gracefully slinking away into dry grass; almost as if it were levitating slightly above the ground. A remarkable sight.

FKISM: Creek track, Middle Farm (Yankalilla) - November 2020

~ Short version of field note: 

This sequence of excerpts from a continuous 13-hour recording represents one of my first attempts at summarising a long duration audio recording as a 'time-compression' of a given site. This was made prior to my use of AudioMoths, which allow greater compactness and configuration, though do compromise fidelity and spatial possibilities (AudioMoths are mono by default.) The site is in a clearing of Middle Farm, close to the footbridge that runs over Carrickalinga Creek and connects to the adjoining property of Mulberry Farm.

FKISM: Underwater bioacoustic activity in Carrickalinga Creek, Yankalilla - July 2022

~ Short version of field note: 

With the Middle Farm dam fuller than usual following continual Winter rains, the frogs have descended on the water en masse for their breeding season. Two varieties of frog can be heard in this recording - the dominant sound is that of Southern Brown Tree frogs, whereas the lower 'guiro' sound is the Painted (Burrowing) frog.

FKISM: Frogs in Middle Farm dam, Yankalilla - June 2023

~ Short version of field note: 

Late night in mid-Spring on Middle Farm with the recorder placed on the verandah of the residence. There is still a little water retained in the property's dam and this is where frogs (Southern Brown Tree Frog and Painted Burrowing Frog) collectively sound out into the night ambience. This recording is particularly interesting in the way that the clusters of voices initially dominate the centre of the listening field, before gradually shifting outward widely and isolate to smaller clusters heard in the distance.

FKISM: Distant frog chorus and night ambience, Middle Farm, Yankalilla - October 2022

~ Short version of field note: 

With my ambisonic recording position on a tree branch at about eye-level, I had intended to record the sound of the tall reeds on the banks of the Carrickalinga Creek. In this area, the reeds are dense and having been dried out by the recent summer, are papery and coarse. In the breeze they rustle and scrape together with even the slightest of movement. As I was approaching the area, along with the breeze, I heard a stirring of activity amongst the reeds.
It was a pair of fairy wrens in a courting ritual, whisking through the reeds, settling on stiff fronds, calling out to each other with short clicks.

Passive acoustic monitoring provides a fresh perspective on fundamental ecological questions

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).
