Environments 12 is a speculative addition to the Environments series (an 11-part field recording series by Irv Teibel from the 1970s), which imagines a cybernetic ecology in which the biosphere, humans, and technology merge through synthetic representations of 'nature'. Created by Machine Listening, it unfolds as a mind-inverting libretto narrated by vocal performers and generative voice clones telling stories of reef lullabies, natural compositions, and large language models for whales and crows. Critically spinning the original Environments series further through balanced conceptualism and irreverent absurdity, Machine Listening's suspension of acoustic realities is deeply perplexing, disorienting and captivating.

Silent Spring is an outdoor sound installation that transmits the vanishing songs of Estonia’s endangered birds via a custom FM network and second-hand radios placed in trees. These scattered devices—powered by solar energy and hidden in bird boxes—emit a haunting soundscape of fractured calls and static interference. As the radios age and decay, they mirror the fading voices of nature itself, urging listeners to confront the ecological silence settling over our landscapes.

Jeanine M. Canty was Visiting Scholar at The New School at Commonweal in October 2025. She is a visionary scholar whose groundbreaking work illuminates the profound connections between consciousness, thought, and our relationship with the natural world. Her teaching weaves together social justice, ecological wisdom, and transformation. 

During this second event with Jeanine, we will look at our various notions of self—ecological, multicultural, and transpersonal—and engage in some experiences and reflections that embody this. Host Susan Grelock Yusem will be in conversation with Jeanine for the first hour, followed by a half hour of experiential work with Jeanine.

Jeanine M. Canty, PhD
Jeanine is a professor of transformative studies at CIIS, telecommuting from Boulder, CO. Formerly the chair of environmental studies at Naropa University, she continues to guest teach at Naropa and at Pacifica Graduate Institute. A lover of nature, justice, and contemplative practice, her teaching intersects issues of social and ecological justice, ecopsychology, and the process of worldview expansion and change. She is author of Returning the Self to Nature: Undoing Our Collective Narcissism and Healing Our Planet and her most recent edited book is an expanded, second edition of Ecological and Social Healing: Multicultural Women’s Voices (2025).

Bridging Mind and Nature | Jeanine Canty

In spring 2025, I created “An Ecological Echo”, my bachelor exam performance consisting of field recordings, dub-influenced textures and archival voices from Gro Harlem Brundtland and Arne Næss about the climate debate. The musical work explored ecological awareness through looping structures, reflecting how the climate debate often moves in cycles without sufficient action.

Juraj Kojš (Slovakia/USA). Miami New Times described his muscle-powered multimedia Neraissance as "striking and unforgettable," MiamiArtzine called his Signals "enthralling and immersive," and Miami Herald praised his Bang for the Train as "the most profound…unexpected and enjoyable."
Kojš’s commissions for acoustic, electroacoustic, multimedia and installation pieces include Meet the Composer, Harvestworks New York, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Deering Estate, Miami Light Project, Miami Theater Center and MDC Live Arts. His works received awards at Europe—A Sound Panorama, Miami New Times Best Off Award, Eastman Electroacoustic Composition and Performance Competition and the Digital Art Award. His research articles are published in Organized Sound, Leonardo Music Journal, Computer Music Journal and Journal of New Music Research. Kojš directs Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts (FETA) and teaches at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.
