Artificial intelligence is supposed to make your life easier, whether it’s in a consumer setting or an industrial setting. Edge computing, which is the on-premise compute component, is growing in its potential. Edge devices started as simple sensors and now they constitute complete compute platforms, in many cases. According to Jonathan Luse, General Manager of Product Planning for the IoT Group at Intel, who was this week’s Five Minutes with…guest, Intel is high on the technology and has the tools a developer needs to connect the dots in an AI-based platform.

IoT has created a tidal wave that data savvy organizations can turn into profitable business solutions. Most IoT data comes from sensors, which are now attached to almost every device imaginable, from factory floor machines and agricultural fields to your cell phone and toothbrush. But IoT is forcing companies to rethink their data architectures to ingest, process, and analyze streaming data in real-time. 

To help us understand the impact of IoT on data architectures, we invited Dan Graham to our show for a second time. Dan is a former product marketing manager at both IBM and Teradata, renowned for combining deep technical knowledge with industry marketing savvy. During his tenure at those companies, he was responsible for MPP data management systems, data warehouses, and data lakes, and most recently, the Internet of Things.

Dan Graham: Impact of IoT on Data Architectures

As almost every object in your home and office become potentially internet-enabled, the IoT is poised to apply a major stress to the current internet and datacenter infrastructure. The popular approach is to centralize cloud data processing in a single site, resulting in lower costs and strong application security. However, with the sheer amount of input data that will be received from globally distributed sources, this structure will require some backup. Also, in most cases, enterprise data is pushed up to the cloud, stored and analyzed, after which a decision is made and action taken. This system is not efficient, and to make it so, there is a need to process some data in IoT case in a smart way, especially if it’s sensitive data that needs quick action.

IDC estimates the amount of data analysed on devices that are physically close to the IoT is approaching 40 percent, which supports the argument for a different approach to smart data processing. Edge/fog computing is the ideal solution to this challenge as it allows computing, decision-making and required action to happen via the IoT device itself, and pushes only relevant data to the cloud.
