In the first episode of our 2024 mini-series on "Socio-Economic Equity & Education" we discussed Intersectionality and Reverse Snobbery with hosts Mazal Oaknin and Macarena Jimenez Naranjo. Joining them are UCL Students Anna and Isaac, who shared their personal experiences navigating socio-economic assumptions, cultural capital, and class perceptions in the UK. Together, they unpack how stereotypes, status symbols, and reverse snobbery impact friendships, trust, and inclusivity on campus. Through intersectionality, they highlight the need to look beyond surface-level markers of privilege, fostering a university environment that values deeper, more meaningful connections.

In this episode, Beverley Isibor sits down with Dwaynica Greaves, a PhD candidate at UCL, to unpack the scope of a research study funded by the Centre for Equality Research in Brain Sciences. Along with the research team, Antonia Hamilton and Isla Jones, Dwaynica discusses how hair types and styles can impact participation. Additionally, they explore why accessibility in research matters, the biases in scientific equipment, and what can be done to make neuroimaging research more inclusive.

It’s about being strong enough to send a gift but not attend, about wondering if a love like that will ever come again , and knowing deep down that even if it does, it won’t be the same.

A gentle, aching reminder that not all love stories end with closure, some end with a voicemail.

There is a great need for more foster carers in the UK. The lack of foster carers means that children who need foster homes have less choice about where they might live, often meaning they are not fostered near to their families and schools. In recent years, foster care organisations have recruited more and more foster carers from ethnic minorities, single foster carers and non-heterosexual foster carers.  

However, Disabled people do not seem to have been reached out to as potential foster carers. This research study set out to explore why Disabled people have not been recruited, especially as many would be likely to have the types of skills that fostering requires. 

In this episode, Peter Unwin and Becki Meakin discuss their research into the underrepresentation of disabled people as foster carers, highlighting the systemic barriers and stereotypes that prevent their inclusion. They outline how fostering agencies can better recruit and support disabled carers through inclusive practices, training, and a shift away from deficit-based thinking.
