Friday Night Funkin': Sk8r's Take OST - Dadbattle Inst

Yesterday, I promised that today's Interbay track wouldn't just be more synth pop--it would feature guitars.  

Well, here is that track--and if you were expecting me to drop some gloomy post-punk, or cheerful power pop, or aggressive punk rock, or even industrial metal...well, that's not the direction I went THIS time (though, those all sound like things I would do...and will do...and have done...)  

No, I decided to go for skritchy funk guitars for an eight-minute workout, blending some classic 70s style funk with some 80s Minneapolis vibes.  Imagine Interbay being asked to come up with incidental music for Purple Rain--but only the scenes where The Kid and Apollonia are aimlessly driving around Eastern Minnesota on his bike...that's the vibe here.    

I think there's a little bit of early Rick James in this, too.  (I hear some of bass pull offs and it reminds me of "You and I".)  

I really wanted slap bass, squidgey synths and some chords for a foundation, over which the guitars can groove endlessly.  

I tried not to make it "too" busy--though, I will admit there were times when my bass groove verges into Seinfeld Theme territory.  

I am proud of some of the synth work, though I fear the chords got close to what I was aiming for but not quite exactly.  

For giggles, every instrument plug-in I used on this track includes the word "funk" in its name...Funkit for drums, Funkbass for bass, Funkister and Funktown for synths, etc.  

Now, I am old enough to have actually owned and worn a leisure suit (tan...everyone had a tan suit back in the day.)  I also know that the image in the thumbnail isn't showing leisure suits, by the definition of the term.  I didn't want modern costume imagery, I wanted original catalog vibes--but the ones I could dig up either only had white guys in them...or were so over the top as to seem cartoony.  This one, I thought, was a good compromise...and it gets the vibe...  

(I should point out that my original inspiration for this was "Oak Tree" by Morris Day, which always seemed like it was done on a dare.  "Hey, Morris, I bet you can't come up with a new dance craze about a tree!"  And Morris smiled and said, "Jerome, hold my Muscatipple, I've got to go to work."  So, if someone out there wants to come up with a 70s funk style dance called the "Leisure Suit"--I am HERE for you.)  

You never know what kind of track will drop next--which is why you should follow this page.  New tracks (in all kinds of styles) drop every single day (for over a year and counting!)
