In another age, Paul Simon could have been Bach or Allegri. This is humanism raised to the level of sacred, (as he says himself elsewhere "words of the prophets... written on the subway walls.") We used to sing this in the car on long road trips; never thought we'd actually record it. The three knells/chimes in the 'mortal man' verse took longer to get right than the basic track! The angel wings are Maz's harmonies.

That elusive American dream in a song; a hymn to enduring hope: all the longing of youth; all the energy and spaciousness and potential of America and all the sadness as both fall short. We're not so much trying to make 'America' great again in our version as to do it justice. Simon & Garfunkel's original version is perfection. Surely one of the greatest folk/pop songs ever written, from lyric through melody to performance, arrangement and production, it's top ten in the Great American Songbook as far as we're concerned.

Sung, recorded and filmed in April 2026 as part of our homage to Paul Simon (who we're going to see in Liverpool next month). This small masterpiece from 1964 inspired by a nursery rhyme spoken by an English girl with whom he was in a relationship wears its ravishingly poetic riches ("when streams are ripe and swelled with rain") lightly, the short, sweet, delicate, circling tune perfectly structuring its superior break up pop song mood. ("...in restless walks she'll prowl the night").

Paul Simon's poignant musical poem about old people, friendship and mortality written in 1969. Well, we were seventeen in 1973 and we're both seventy this year and these days it's more like 'how terribly strange to be 17'. We remember when "When I'm 64' seemed like a tombstone milestone but we passed that one a while ago.

The film is a celebration of a friendship that goes back almost as long as we do and has the space age Universe City that was 1970s UEA in common. Here we all are, in that same fine city half a century later. And there we all were once looking at all this from the other side of that enormous age gap.

I once watched a person I love destroy themselves. Utterly. This song is about witnessing a descent into inevitable oblivion. Perhaps one of you has been there too.  This song is for all who have watched the sun set on a life as we grew pale with terror at our own powerlessness to prevent their destruction.

Trauma

At the end, the myth falls away and only the man remains. The two lost notes return, Dakkar becomes whole again, and the Nautilus descends slowly until the organ loses its stops, its air and its light.

Like "Crazy Man Michael",  this is both a classic folk song emerging from the genius of Richard Thompson for the iconic voice of bandmate Sandy Denny to make her memorable own AND a song that sounds like it was wriitten in a previous England of long long ago. In fact, Thompson wrote it after the band's tour van crashed killing his girlfriend Jeannie 'The Tailor" Franklyn and the band's drummer Martin Lamble. ("Meet on the Ledge" is his own sung homage to those tragic losses.) The tune is the traditional Child ballad "Fause Foodrage/ East Muir King". "Farewell, Farewell" deserves its place on probably the greatest folk album ever, "Liege and Lief", which we eager Peacocks have visited more than once or twice for our inspiration.
