Free Samples takes a deep dive into the history of hip hop by focusing on the samples that make up some of the genre’s most iconic albums. Select songs from each album are dissected in detail. Each original sample is played followed by an explanation of how it fits into the song we are examining. After each sample in the song of focus is broken down, the song is played in full. 

One of the seminal instrumental hip hop albums, DJ Shadow's Entroducing..... was the first hip hop record to be entirely composed of samples. This 1996 masterpiece was composed on an AKAI MPC60 sampler, a Technics SL-1200 turntable, and an Alesis ADAT tape recorder and did not reach classic status until years after it was released. DJ Shadow's innovative sampling pushed the bounds of what was acceptable in hip hop, with tracks pulling from songs ranging from Bjork to Metallica.
