Engineers Without Borders - Voiceover

This interview is part of the University YMCA’s oral history project called “Telling Stories.” In this episode Jenni Kotting interviews Kenny Long with the help of Kasey Umland.
Kenny Long is a leader in Engineers without Borders, and a new student board of governors member. When he came to the University of Illinois, his family in Texas couldn’t believe how far from home he would be. Soon enough, his involvement with the Y would take him even farther... to Africa. Kenny arrived to the village of Ntisaw with other student engineers. You can hear in his voice the affection and respect he developed for the place. He especially admires the way politics and religion played out while the water system was being planned. Listening to Kenny, you can understand why he got attached to Ntisaw. The people, as a community, worked so hard to get fresh water. They saved an improbable amount of money. And when everything went wrong, they did it all over again. During the interview, we all laughed at the prospect of trying to define “social justice” - it’s such a huge concept. But Kenny got serious pretty quickly. These trips seemed to have instilled a personal definition in him.

Walker joined a new episode of Beyond the Brown & Gold to discuss how he landed in the engineering field; Rowan's Engineers without Borders; and taking a risk by moving to New York City to pursue his dreams.

Also, Walker describes the importance of mentors to career development; how marathon running helped him build community; and how is journey through Rowan University shaped him.

With water being fundamental to life, no wonder it is being heralded as the next global crisis. Growing up in the Torres Straits, Erin was surrounded by water and saw first-hand the impact engineering could have on local communities when trying to manage water challenges. As a result, surface water engineering became the focus of Erin’s career. In addition to her career, she is passionate about STEM education and improving the quality of life in remote indigenous communities. Her belief that ‘closing the gap’ can be achieved through both sustainable, evidence-based engineering projects and the two-way sharing of knowledge and cultures underpins her practice. 

Erin is currently a 2019-2020 Superstar of STEM and over the last 4 years has been working on outreach programs which deliver engineering projects to remote schools in the Torres Straits in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders.

Fizzics Education exists to deliver engaging science to any audience, anywhere!

We've been a leading Australian provider of interactive science workshops and shows since 2004, delivering inspiring science programs to approximately 300,000 children each year via incursion and video conference across 400 schools and public spaces throughout Australia and around the world. Our science presentations are run in schools and in non-traditional environments such as movie cinemas, shopping centers, libraries, juvenile justice centers, hospitals, park lands, sports stadiums, retirement homes, university theaters and any other facility able to accommodate large or small groups of people.

The University YMCA is a non-profit campus Y at the University of Illinois in Champaign. It focuses on social justice, environmental responsibility, and student leadership development. (ie. not a gym or pool) These audio documentaries are created and narrated by Jenni Kotting as part of an oral history project aimed to share and preserve the interesting happenings and cause-driven work at the University Y.
