The Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida said, more or less, that "an artist should always try to do what he still does not know how to do.” Without actually knowing this quotation but only the sensation and the wakefulness behind it, Refree’s musical art seems to subscribe word for word to Chillida’s edict. 

In 2017 Refree undertook the production of two instrumental leaning 10-inch solo EPs. Jai Alai vol.01, is mostly a collection of reflective solo guitar music, with each title named according to the instrument used on the track and the date on which it was played (“Ramirez 11012017” / “Telecaster 01032017b”). The second Jai Alai volume is quite a different proposition, with the material coming from a soundtrack project, and the sound palette expanded to include recordings of street music, voices and a subtle electronic dimension.

“I started the first 10" collection because I didn’t feel like waiting for an album to be recorded and I was feeling more attached to showing what I was doing, and how I was feeling about music, right then. More like a work in progress. I also thought it was more related to the way music works nowadays. But after Jai Alai vol.2 I thought these two releases had a strong relation between them, in the way one is the evolution of the other. I wanted to do instrumental music, but at the same time I wanted vocal recordings to be the inspiration of some compositions. There's no singer but there is one. There's no more than just me on every song but at times there's something like a whole orchestra.” 

It is revealing that much of La Otra Mitad is music made for a movie. Or maybe, it could be called music from a movie (not all songs appear in the film). Or, perhaps also, music made during the construction of a movie. The film in question is "Entre dos aguas” by Isaki Lacuesta. The director Lacuesta explains the soundtrack’s unconventional creative process: "

It was very good that Raül came to the filming in San Fernando, because he worked in the field just like us. Sometimes he was there during the filming of a scene and kept a recording of the voice of one of the characters, which then became a piece of music. On other occasions we showed him something in the editing room and worked the sound part right there, like Neil Young when he played music for Jim Jarmusch's ‘Dead Man,’ which is a reference that I always had in mind during this process.” 

The soundtrack pieces are an exercise in voices found and then converted into samples: that of flamenco singer Rocío Márquez, that of El Bolita, a boy who participated in the film and who spontaneously started singing in front of Raül, or the discarded vocal sketches from El Niño de Elche’s celebrated “Antología del Cante Flamenco Heterodoxo” which was co-composed and produced by Refree. 

"I was very interested in the idea of making music with voices that were not recorded on purpose for this record," says Raül. "They had to be recorded in other contexts, with another objective. This decision made me much more open to unforeseen things happening. And, in the end, this spirit fit with a line of work that I had been exploring for some time: to see what other areas can be reached with flamenco, something based on a certain idea of the South's environment.” 

Throughout the process of making La Otra Mitad, Raül Refree also found another voice: his own; always changing, always expanding in richness and always open to saying, what he does not yet know.

As far back as 1976, musical critics and the media in general began to recognize MICHAEL LAUCKE “one of the world’s greatest guitarists” (New York Post, Eugenia Sheppard), as his exquisite playing of beautiful classical and exciting flamenco works continued to win him just such critical praise from Carnegie Hall to the White House to the Great Wall of China.

Maestro Laucke first heard and fell in love with the guitar at the age of seven and began playing seriously at eleven. Early in his career, he delighted international visitors toMontreal’s Olympic Games in a concert performance that was also transmitted live to a TV audience around the world. At the age of 21, he was engaged to perform at the U.S.White House “Young Artist Series”.

His guitar colleagues, teachers, and friends have been the greatest names in guitar in the twenty-first century –
Andres Segovia, Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, Julian Bream…. A lifelong friendship was born when de Lucia and Laucke shared a loft in New York City and performed together to a circle of friends which included: Calvin Klein, Andy Warhol, Tiffany jewelry designer countess Elsa Peretti, Halston, DiSantangelo, White House resident soloist Rolando Valdes-Blain, dignitaries from many countries, presidents and senators. 

He has the distinction of being the only Canadian disciple of the great Andres Segovia. Segovia chose Laucke from over 2000 guitarists to perform in his film at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which was televised throughout North America on PBS to more than 25 million viewers.

He has performed some 150 concerts a year worldwide on television and in major halls to enthusiastic capacity audiences, in 26 countries. His appearances include the White House¸Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, the National Art Gallery and the famous Caucus Room of the United States Senate in Washington, Minorities Palace in Beijing, the Great Wall of China, Tzavta Theatre in Tel-Aviv, the World’s Fair in Seville, PBS specials, 10 consecutive years of sold-out concerts at Place des Arts in Montreal; among many others.

In North America, he was heralded by the Joan Reinthaler of The Washington Post as displaying “the highest form of virtuosity” ; one of his proudest moments was when renowned music critic Eric McLean wrote in THE MONTREAL GAZETTE, “Laucke is the person who has done more for the guitar in this country than anyone else”. On the uniqueness of his performances, one Chicago reporter observed in GUITAR AND LUTE MAGAZINE: 

“Laucke has an easy ability to communicate his great love for his music, and what a presence on the stage!…he won the hearts of the audience before even playing a note!”

Winner of many prestigious awards, including the “Grand Prix du Disque“, Michael Laucke has made many fine records, CDs and cassettes, has been featured in six films,publications, numerous TV & Radio appearances and in a superb eight-tape instructional video series; a total of 20 albums, 67 products in all. As well, 25 works by prominent Canadian modern composers were written for, performed and recorded by him; composers such as Morel, Boudreau, Brégent, Gonneville, Garant, Rea, etc.

Le projet Pamplemousse Rose à vu le jour en 2018, à la suite d'une journée passée dans un entrepôt à charger des palettes de Perrier Pamplemousse Rose dans des camions. C'est à ce moment précis qu'Alexandre s'est dit : "Mon prochain projet musical se nommera Pamplemousse Rose" !

Depuis, il a aussi rejoint le collectif de DJ français BPM, son remix turc "Demiyom Mu" de Neşe Karaböcek a été lancé sur le renommé label new yorkais Gouranga, sa pièce "Ya Mustapha, chérie je t'adore" a été signée sur le label Nomad Roots Records et le remake de “Je dois m’en aller” avec le duo parisien Saint-Honoré s’est hissé au sommet du palmarès  du Buzz Chart en France . 

Alexandre Dionne, connu sous le nom de Pamplemousse Rose, a eu plusieurs projets musicaux dans le passé avec lesquels il a joué en Europe, aux États-Unis et en Asie. Il a également été co-réalisateur en studio durant quelques années et à écrit plusieurs chansons pour différents artistes. Entre 2000 et 2005, il a sorti plus d'une dizaine de disques vinyles sous différents labels de musique électronique et s'est produit dans plusieurs clubs renommés.

Pamplemousse Rose c'est d'abord et avant tout pour l'amour de la musique. Des influences françaises aux grooves brésiliens ou arabes, en passant par des rythmes de musique house et nu disco, toutes les pièces de Pamplemousse Rose ont ceci en commun de vous apporter une dose de soleil.

El aporte de este grupo ha sido importantísimo tanto en la difusión de compositores nacionales como en la creación, con nuevas tendencias, de la música folclórica boliviana. La sencillez que implican dos voces y una guitarra, se transforman en el viejo arte de la voz popular llevada al trabajo del verso escrito para luego transformarse en canción.
Melissa Herrera, Mauricio Montero, Marco Flores han experimentado no sólo con elementos de la música nacional boliviana, sino también con elementos de la música popular latinoamericana y esta experiencia sin duda ha enriquecido su trabajo propositivo.
Cuando hablamos de Entre 2 Aguas, nos referimos a nuevas formas de hacer música boliviana, desde la explotación criolla de los ritmos, hasta los nuevos pasos armónicos con círculos no tradicionales, tensiones y disonancias emergentes, que antes eran consideradas como transgresoras de las normas ya resueltas para estos estilos de música.
Pero si hay algo que de principio despertó el interés del público hacia este grupo, fue el carácter de la búsqueda de sus letras y el alcance de todo lo que imprimían en el papel. La voz de Melissa extraordinaria desde siempre se hizo como un sello de esta nueva forma de hacer música. Después de un tiempo empezó a reconocerse la identidad plasmada en la guitarra de Mauricio cuyo sonido y expresión espontánea se apoderaron de los teatros y conciertos, la presencia y el talento en los teclados de Marco Flores enriqueció de enorme manera la propuesta de Entre 2 Aguas.
