“There's one thing that we will never do together, and that's make music!“ – „I can still hear myself saying that to Alix. That was about a year ago when we met up for the first time at the Wiener Augarten”, explains Mr. [dunkelbunt] telling the story of how his latest collaboration with the singer ALIX was born.

Born in Berlin, Alexander Leuschner was one of the influx of German students who came to Vienna taking advantage of Austria's affordable University system. Last summer he applied to [dunkelbunt] for an internship and although it had been made clear in the job description that the position did not incorporate making music but focused on the ins and outs of how a label operates he still sent in one of his songs along with a wonderfully brash application letter.

“When I listened to it I immediately felt like I'd met my musical soul mate and that was the reason I had to ring him to arrange that meeting at Augarten. Then after a few days of checking each other out we decided to make music together.” „Es ist egal, wo Du herkommst und auch egal wohin Du gehst, solang’ Du nur dem Weg Deines Herzens folgst und dafür gerade stehst....“ (“It doesn't matter where you come from or where you're going as long as you follow your heart and stand with pride...”) that was the first of his contributions that burrowed it's way into my head, a chorus that Alix wrote over the [dunkelbunt] Riddim “Schlawiener”, more or less as an acid test. A few weeks later he was standing with us on stage at the „National Tennis Center Bratislava and now I couldn't imagine [dunkelbunt] & Secret Swing Society without him.”

The first fruits of this collaboration will be released this summer with “Augen zu und durch” and “Süßwasser Salzwasser” the lyrics as the titles suggest are in German, “We inspire each other equally. My music is a homage to him and his lyrics are a homage to me which is both beautiful and liberating.” says Mr [dunkelbunt]. “With that foundation we decided to make an album together and the first release is the track “Boomeræng”, incorporating rap, vocals and swinging hip hop beats, using oriental and western instrumentation with a urban and nostalgic flair.”

Ulf Lindemann aka [dunkelbunt] was born in Hamburg in 1979 and came to Austria at the beginning of the millennium to study and make music. In 2002 in his Vienna studio he began to merge electronic music with Balkan, Gypsy and Swing sounds and along with his contemporaries like Waldeck, Parov Stelar and Shantel who helped popularize the new music genres, „Electro Swing“ and „Balkan Beats“.
On his albums, songs and remixes he captures the hum of the Global Village in our Cyber Age cooperating with over 150 musicians and incorporating 14 languages. Urban beats, grooving basslines, electronic and organic instrumentation and rhythms from the whole world. Mosaics of sound, soundbites and field recordings from his travels invite the listener to dance or to dream.

Ultimate Frisbee - Ein anderes Rundes, das auch ins Eckige muss

[dunkelbunt] aka Ulf Lindemann, born in 1979 in Hamburg (D), lives and works as a DJ, composer, producer, radio editor and mixer of spices in Vienna (A) since 2001. His name [dunkelbunt] represents diversity and the ongoing search for ever new musical fusions and styles. [dunkelbunt]´s list of cooperations with bands and musicians seems to be as extensive as the musical waters he crosses.
Being a gifted piano player himself [dunkelbunt] redevelops his own distinctive style and musical sense with every musical influence and every ethnic group he comes across.
Since 2006 Ulf Lindemann travels the world on behalf of his music: cities like New York, San Fransisco, Istanbul, Paris, Melbourne, or Kapstadt were just a few of the stops on his 2007/08 tour to promote his debut album MORGENLANDFAHRT.

MORGENLANDFAHRT is a mélange of Dub, Reggae, Klezmer, Jazz, Electronics, Trip Hop and Break Beats - woven with a Balkan twist. Numerous co-operations with both Viennese and international musicians from the Balkan and Klezmer scenes have enriched many of the tracks on the album, namely performers like 5nizza, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Amsterdam Klezmer band, Harry Stojka, Östblocket, MC Killo Killo, Orient Expressions and many more.

MORGENLANDFAHRT is also a result of Ulf´s move from Hamburg to Vienna in 2001. Initially inspired by the rich electronic music scene in Vienna, he quickly encountered the special Viennese musical diversity ranging from the traditional music from the Balkan to the Orient. This historically grown “Melange” of cultural influences from the near and far eastern neighbours has ever since been a specialty of Vienna which gives it an open-minded and pulsating character. Something you can inhale everyday at Vienna’s famous Naschmarkt with it’s babel-esque mix of languages, foods and goods to buy.

It was this side of Vienna, which let Ulf discover his second passion: he mixes and blends exquisite spices from India, Africa, South America and Europe. Both following old recipes and inventing his own he creates Berbere (Ethiopia), Ras el Hanout (Morocco), Coffespiece, Tandori Masala (India), Cinq-epices (China), bread herbs (Austria), herbal salt and many more.

In a certain way cooking and composing seems to be something very similar to [dunkelbunt]. Basically he simply uses different ingredients: herbs or instruments, sounds or colours, taste, smell, or look. It all comes down to the search for an harmoniuos whole. Nuances will come with the seasoning. Food is both – one fort he body, the other fort he soul.

Although the musical essence rests upon the South-eastern corners of Europe, sounds from all around this planet are to be enjoyed: from Vienna to the Balkans, through Anatolia and the Middle East, India, North Africa, not to mention South America, to Jamaica and straight to the swinging North American Thirties.

Answering the question how he himself would describe his sound Lindemann says:

„The world offers a breathtaking plurality of music. It wouldn´t cross my mind to settle for only one style. When DJing I am travelling around the world together with my audience carried on by the music. Timelessly we are dancing through Countries and Continents getting drunk with the infinite beauty of the music. I consider myself an intermediary searching for soulful music and its magic to share it with other people.”

Gute Artikel beginnen neuerdings immer mit Zitaten. Wieso auch nicht? Wieso etwas schreiben, was jemand anderer bereits mit möglicherweise besseren Worten geschrieben, oder gesagt hat, als man es selbst könnte? Meistens stammen dann Zitate auch noch von berühmten Persönlichkeiten, denen man ein besonderes Maß an Strahlkraft, Intelligenz und rhetorischen Fähigkeiten beimisst. Stimmt alles. Also ...

Sport ist also nicht nur passiv, wie auch aktiv ausgeübt, ein nettes Pläsir, eine Form der Katharsis und des Eskapismus, sondern sehr wohl auch gesamtgesellschaftlich relevant. Ganz besonders dann, wenn Außergewöhnliches geleistet wird. Von Mannschaften und Einzelpersonen. Inspiration sind sie uns, die Sportlerinnen und Sportler, die sich über ihr eigenes Leid erheben und für uns Ungeahntes erreichen, schaffen, erleben.
Beispiele gefällig? Muhammad Ali, Hermann Maier, Cathy Freeman, Joe Dunlop. Nur um einige zu nennen.

In diesem Punkt definiert sich auch schon der erste Arbeitsauftrag der Sendereihe: Wir bringen ihnen die Lebensgeschichten von Personen näher, die durch ihre sportlichen Leistungen und durch ihr Leben an sich, aus dem Rahmen des Sportes ausgebrochen sind und für uns als Gesellschaft Bedeutung erlangt haben.
Aber nicht nur das. "Momente des Sports" blickt auch auf Randsportarten und auf deren Entstehung und Geschichte.

Das Ganze wird von uns in Form gegossen und als Features und Reportagen ihnen dargebracht. Wir bitten einzuschalten, aufzudrehen und schlicht zu hören.

P.S.: Im Januar wurde Momente des Sports sogar für den Radiopreis der Erwachsenenbildung 2013 nominiert. Das Feature "You'll never walk alone - die Musik und der Fußball" wurde im April 2014 mit dem "Sports Media Austria"-Preis für Journalisten ausgezeichnet.
