This traditional French carol dates from the late 15th century and the early 16th century. It celebrates all of the figures in the crèche, the handmade nativity scenes found throughout France, where they are part of the Christmas celebration in homes and in town squares.  This arrangement features the different families of instruments bringing variety to this haunting ancient melody.

BIG CITY DREAMS for Euphonium, Tuba, and Piano was given its world premiere in 2024 by SymbiosisDuo artists Dr. Gail Robertson and Dr. Stacy Baker, along with Dr. Kazuo Murakami, at the International Women’s Brass Conference in Mito City, Japan. It is a programmatic work following the hopes, emotional journey, and achievements of two characters, portrayed by the euphonium and tuba. With the piano playing the third character of the calling metropolis, BIG CITY DREAMS is a tribute to individuals everywhere, whose aspirations, tenacity, and tireless spirit make our world a better and happier place.

Grandfather's Clock

This week's prompt was to record a piece of music that is a deep drone but also contains a melody.

I have been trying to keep my chops up on my baritone horn (basically, a euphonium), so I thought a low brass instrument might provide a nice starting point.

I improvised a slow melody with no more than three breaths per note. 

Then, I put the melody into Ableton and dropped it down an octave, unWarped, to make each note longer.

I pieced together an FX chain that used an Envelope Follower to swell in the volume, with the idea of removing the notes' attacks. Then, I put a long echo plug-in with 99% feedback at the end of the horn channel.

I added some synths by using Ableton's Convert Audio to Melody function.  I moved the synths up a couple of octaves, and moved one up an extra fifth to provide harmonies. I increased the attack and releases of both synths to try to smear the notes into drones. I also added subtle EQ sweeps to each to give some motion.

I also added a vocoder set to static to the baritone horn melody, and removed all the low frequencies. This has an envelope follower mapped to the pan, with the idea that it will move itself around the stereo field based on intensity.

The last piece came from an experiment - just for fun, I made another instance of the vocoder and set it to "pitch tracking" to see what would happen. I ended up getting a buzzy dictaphone sound which sat nicely in the mix. I also put a lot of echo on this one to some EQ sweeps to make it less harsh.

Solaris II (Euphonium-Tuba Quartet)

Founded in 2013, the Southern California Brass Consortium (SCBC) grew out of the desire to form a large, professional brass ensemble that performs challenging, yet accessible music. Our 26-member group performs a wide range of compositions and styles, as well as presenting works that include harp, piano, and organ. SCBC not only includes talented brass players and percussionists, but also highly-skilled arrangers and composers within its ranks. We strive to present both new works and new arrangements by local and national composers. The goal of the SCBC is to share the exhilarating spirit of brass ensemble music through high-quality concerts, recordings, and educational outreach. SCBC recently had the honor of opening the 55th L.A. County Holiday Celebration at the Los Angeles Music Center on Christmas Eve, which was televised live on PBS.

Kevin Day (b. 1996) is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary composer, jazz pianist and conductor. Internationally acclaimed as one of the world’s leading musical voices, Dr. Day’s work is known as a vibrant exploration of diverse musical traditions from contemporary classical, jazz, R&B, Soul and more. A unique voice in the world of classical music, Dr. Day takes inspiration from a broad range of sources, including romanticism, late 20th century music, jazz fusion and gospel. Across all areas, his work explores the complex interplay of rhythm, texture and melody across genres. 

Dr. Day burst onto the musical scene in 2018 with his Concerto for Euphonium, which has since gone on to become a Classic FM sensation and has been recently performed by the United States Marine Band. Since then, some of the world’s top instrumental soloists, wind bands, chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras have commissioned and performed his works, including the Cincinnati Opera, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Winds, Nu Deco Ensemble, Boston Brass, Capitol Quartet, Puerto Rican Trombone Ensemble, Syrinx Quintet, Sheffield Chamber Players and many others throughout the United States, Canada, Austria, Taiwan, South Africa, Australia and Japan. Dr. Day is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Copland House Residency Award, the MacDowell Fellowship for Music Composition, the BMI Composer Award, the TCU Alumni Outstanding Young Professional Award, a three-time ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist, a finalist for the ABA Sousa-Oswald Award, a finalist for the NBA Revelli Award, and many more. 

Dr. Day’s original opera, Lalovavi: An Afro-Futurist Opera in Three Acts, will premiere at the Cincinnati Opera as the lead work in its ground-breaking new Black Opera Project. The work is the first of three commissioned by the Cincinnati Opera as part of its initiative to engage Black creators in developing new works celebrating Black stories. As part of the project, Dr. Day is collaborating with renowned director Kimille Howard and librettist Tifara Brown, who’s recognized as one of the country’s leading performance poets. Other recent works include his acclaimed Concerto for Wind Ensemble and Birds in the Cathedral, as well as Ignition, commissioned by the Boston Symphony Low Brass and Unquiet Waters, commissioned by Jordan VanHemert.

In addition to his work as a composer, Dr. Day also enjoys an active career as a jazz pianist. Passionate about collaborations that reimagine and advance the future of jazz as an art form, he brings his extensive musical background to the stage and studio as improviser and collaborator. He’s currently working on a debut solo album. His music has been featured on numerous high profile releases, including albums by Thomas Mesa and Michelle Cann, The Alias Chamber Ensemble, Jeremy Wilson, Jarrett McCourt, and Nicki Roman.

A native of Arlington, Texas, Dr. Day currently resides in San Diego, CA. He holds degrees from Texas Christian University (TCU), the University of Georgia, and the University of Miami. He has studied composition with Dorothy Hindman, Charles Norman Mason, Peter Van Zandt Lane, Emily Koh, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Neil Anderson-Himmelspach. Dr. Day currently works as Lecturer of Music Theory and Musicianship at the UC San Diego Department of Music.
