This lecture discusses key ideas from the Renaissance-era philosopher, critic, and essayist Michel De Montaigne's work Essays, specifically his essay On Cato The Younger

It focuses upon that Stoic statesman and philosopher, Cato, who fought in the Civil War against Julius Caesar and killed himself rather than accept Caesar's offered amnesty. While discussing him, Montaigne makes some important points about not judging the capacities of other people by reference to our own, or thinking that because our times are particularly badly off with respect to virtue, that all times and cultures are.

The name Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin word for command. It references the command Jesus delivers in the context of his humbling act of washing his disciples's feet: the command to love "just as" he has loved. In that context he makes it clear that we may not always understand why this is his will. But even if we do not understand, we do know that this is his way and his will for his people.
