Cellular is an iOS synthesizer based on a cellular automaton algorithm, available for free download on the App Store.

In Cellular, there is a grid of cells called the "universe." Each cell can be either alive or not, and their states change over generations. Rules determine how inactive cells can come to life in the next generation and how active cells can continue or stop existing — this is how life evolves in the universe. You can group cells into a commune and measure its population density. This density determines the strength of the modulation signal, which can be used to control synthesizer parameters.
