Albert Camus, Letter To A German Friend - Letter 2: The Price Of Intelligence - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher, novelist, and essayist Albert Camus' four Letters To A German Friend (anthologized in Resistance, Rebellion, and Death: Essays)

Specifically it examines the third letter, which elaborates the theme of the meaning of Europe, a matter where fascists and nationalists like the Nazis view matters one way and other Europeans view matters differently. The Nazis view Europe as something to possess and dominate, a system of resources to exploit. Camus advocates viewing Europe much as he views France, as something valuable, to which one can belong, and which has to be held to standards of justice and truth.

Through darkness, destiny is carved in stone
Yet man has been given the fragile gift of free will,
And for a fleeting breath, he believes he can rewrite what already awaits him.
Lives cross upon the thin thread allowed by time.

Connections are formed, bonds are forged in fire or in silence.
But neither time nor life belongs to us;
Every choice is a knife plunged into eternity — and every destiny, the blade returning to the hand.

Lives are taken, even when we fight against the current.
And when the future is poisoned by worms that feed on deceit,
Only the vengeance of a stolen love remains,
Returning to chaos to demand its due.

The man who keeps his word seals his own oath with blood.
And when the primal instinct shatters the bars of morality,
The true human nature is revealed:
Chaos, destruction, and death.

Love and hate become indistinguishable,
Fused into a single incandescent metal.
Physical death is but the first gate.
In darkness, this wretched existence shall face eternal punishment.
But in the world of men,
It shall know the purest, deepest meaning of pain…
And despair.

The symmetry of time unveils its cruel perfection — the same void awaiting him at the end has dwelled within him from the beginning. The melody is not a lament, but the cold acknowledgment that suffering is not punishment, but the final truth.
