Matter continues his mission to rescue Hiphop from its self-imposed, over-intellectualised boom-bap backpack, cornball-ass pop-techno, wannabe gangsters pouring out their hearts over rnb beats abyss.  His objective is to restore it to its original, majestic and arguably sole purpose, a purpose that we will refer to here as Hiphouse.

I had a discussion with people today in a slack channel for music production and chiptunes seemed to be the flavor of the day. With NES as the central 8bit platform in question, I decided to do a little mix based on the 2A03 processor's basic audio capabilities:

2 pulse, 1 saw, 1 noise.

Yes, I know that I'm using 3 pulse and I have a compressor and reverb, but it's the spirit of the thing... ok?

Still in the spirit of the harmonic minor in D, I've experimented with attempting to separate elements of the chord progression on the piano into other instruments.

I've found that the very modern EDM synth sounds mix well with piano and both rock and orchestral percussion.

I've happy with how this one turned out. Now, on to explore more scales and chord progressions...

More tools, more tools, more tools. MIDI patterns, chord progressions, arpeggiation... 

Slowly improving and liking the sounds I get more and more. I seem to be leaning heavier on the atmospheric side. I'll see if I can start working on improving on the melodic, major scales in the future.

So... I may have gone a little overboard on this one. I watched Armin Van Buuren's class on using LFO tools for ducking effects and instruments and whatnot... I think I might have overdone it. haha.

Today was mostly about experimenting with two instruments I feel less comfortable working with: Bass and Kick. The two things any trance music needs to have kicking ass.

I made a focus of the bass today. I've been listening to synthwave and there are certain sound with many synth basses that I wanted to simulate. All around I like the bass.

As far as the melody, I've been learning about counterpoint and attempted to try my hand at some of the concepts. Sadly, I think I ended up with so much focus on the technical rules of melody and counter melody that it took the human aspect out of the equation. The melody doesn't sound "bad", but it sound extremely dull and formulaic.

Trying to get back into the groove of things. I took a different approach today and tried starting with the melody instead of the chords.

It's all very instrumental, but I feel better about the over all feel of the piece and how clean it sounds.
