Vocalise Two for solo cello by Alex Van Sant. Written in 2024 for performance by Clara Griffin on December 11th 2024. 

This piece is an exploration of the vocal changes that resulted from my use of testosterone—a chronicle of frustration and frenzied battling with my voice that eventually settles with a consonant and melodious ending in the instrument’s lower register.
Vocalise Two uses a solo instrument to express my experience of my voice as a locus of struggle, self-discovery, and self-construction.

From the Greek ergo (work) and phobos (fear), ergophobia refers to an excessive and persistent fear of one’s own work and the daily tasks and commitments it entails. This piece draws on the words of the Italian poet Dino Campana (1885–1932), a troubled figure in Italian literature who emerged from a provincial bourgeois background and stood firmly against the common middle- class values that measured a man’s worth by his labor.
Considered mentally ill, misunderstood, and spending much of his life in and out of psychiatric institutions, Campana openly mocked his own condition, ironically calling himself the “electric Campana” after undergoing numerous electroshocks. In homage to the American composer James Tenney (1934–2006) and his pioneering work in noise synthesis, the music channels the intimate physiology of the mouth into an imagined marine landscape through amplification and electronic transformations. 
Conceived as a delicate exploration of the oral cavity, it employs various specialized microphones, such as laryngophones and large-diaphragm models and different types of windshields, including foam and metal screens, to sculpt resonance and subtly reshape or soften explosive consonants.
Amplification shapes and unveils aspects of human vocal production that are normally inaudible or fail to project acoustically into musical form. Through this technology, the voice merges with environmental sonorities to yield timbres that transcend the conventional boundaries of vocal expression, further connecting the piece’s thematic exploration of labor, fear, and poetic resonance with an evolving sonic landscape.

ESHU (2011)

Escape Cycles was inspired by addiction, healing, and the cycles that result which have an immeasurable impact on those affected and their loved ones. It was commissioned by Jenni Shanahan, and is dedicated to John, who learned to pick himself up again.

I constructed a Bohlen Pierce ostinato in Ableton Live, went out to my wood shop in the barn, hung a microphone and improvised over it on my flute with reverb and delay.  I hit record and captured a couple of minutes of what was about an hour of improvisations.  I am interested in the idea of different tunings in counterpoint with each other.  This is an early attempt - more to come!

Contemporary music for an animated short from one of my colleagues at university. This is the demo I did previously to the live performance. It's orchestrated for a Pierrot quintet plus tenor saxophone, percussion and voices.

The Tower

Seule is a suite of seven pieces for flute and alto flute by Heather Hindman, commissioned by Chenoa Anderson with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts as part of Anderson's "dystonic project”, which involved composing and workshopping flute pieces tailored to playing through chronic injury and illness. Recorded by Nicolás Arnáez at the Sound Studies Institute studio at the University of Alberta.

Grand metamorphosis no. 5

Flutist Chenoa Anderson is a settler artist living and practicing in amiskwaciy-wâskahikan/Edmonton. She has commissioned and premiered dozens of solo and ensemble pieces, and is an active improviser who has worked with musicians, dancers, and spoken word artists. Current projects include UltraViolet - a mixed quartet; dystonic – collaborative work exploring lived experience with chronic injury and illness; Garden – multidisciplinary works set in her permaculture garden; Mixtur with composer Ian Crutchley (found objects); and damn magpies, a free improvisation sextet. She holds performance degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. In addition to her active performing and teaching career, Chenoa is the General Manager for New Music Edmonton; is on the board of the Canadian New Music Network; and is a Butterflyway Ranger volunteer for the David Suzuki Foundation.

Steve Owens grew up in upstate NY, and has a bachelor's in musicology, a master’s in Music Education and an MFA in music composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts.  He developed parallel careers as a concert flutist and as an educator in Vermont public schools.  He's published band, choral, and chamber compositions with Hal Leonard and Alry.  Steve has since left academics to pursue composition full time. Recent performances include a woodwind quintet played by City of Tomorrow, and an electro-acoustic sextet performed by The Playground Ensemble. His latest work, "Dysphoria" for the Truberry Duo, explores the inner experience of neurodivergence, drawing on his own experience as an autistic educator.

Panayiotis Kokoras studied composition with Yannis Ioannides, Henri Kergomard, Kosta Varotsi, and classical guitar with Evangelos Asimakopoulos in Athens, Greece. In 1999, he moved to England for postgraduate study at the University of York where he completed his MA and PhD in composition with Tony Myatt. His works have been commissioned by institutes and festivals such as the Fromm Music Foundation (Harvard), IRCAM (France), Guggenheim (New York), MATA (New York), Gaudeamus (Netherlands), ZKM (Germany), IMEB (France), Siemens Musikstiftung (Germany) and have been performed in over 1000 concerts around the world. His compositions have received 98 distinctions and prizes in international competitions and have been selected by juries in more than 350 international calls for scores. He is president of the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music (ICEIM-ICEM) and a founding member of the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association (HELMCA) and from 2004 to 2012 he was a board member and president. Kokoras’ sound compositions develop functional classification and matching sound systems written on what he calls Holophonic Musical Texture. As an educator, Kokoras has taught at the Technological and Educational Institute of Crete, and, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece). Currently, he is Regents Professor of Composition at the University of North Texas and director of the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia (CEMI).

Louis Aguirre (f. 1968) Cubansk komponist bosiddende i Danmark. Aguirre er uddannet som komponist i Cuba, Amsterdam, men fortsatte studierne efter han flyttede til Danmark i 2004, og afsluttede solistklassen i komposition ved Det jyske Musikkonservatorium i 2007. Aguirre er en stærk og original stemme i dansk musikliv. Hans værkliste, med mere end 200 værker, inkluderer: opera, orkester- og kammermusik, soloværker, vokalmusik, koral-, elektronisk- og didaktisk musik. Han er en aktiv del af musiklivet i Danmark og Nordjylland, bl.a. ved sit arbejde som medlem af komponistgruppen Snow Mask og som kunstnerisk leder af Snow Mask Ensemblet. En række af hans værker er inspirerede af den cubanske Santeria religion og de religiøse tekster fra området.

Ken Walicki is an American composer who is widely recognized and acknowledged for his dramatic, and engaging music, which reflects the times in which we live. Because of his unusual and interesting background, his sound world has evolved into a unique combination of Art, Pop, Jazz, and World music. Walicki‘s influences include Gyorgy Ligeti, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Public Enemy, and much more. He was one of the first composers to use turntables in his music and the first composer to have turntables and a D.J. as regular members in a standing ensemble. His music has been performed throughout the world by, among others, the Kronos Quartet, ETHEL, the New Century Saxophone Quartet, the Soldier String Quartet, the Divan Consort, and members of the New York Philharmonic, The Los Angeles Symphony, The Los Angeles Chamber Symphony, The Detroit Symphony, The Pacific Symphony, the Istanbul Borusan Orchestra, and the SWR Kaiserslautern Orchestra. He is the composer-in-residence for the new music ensemble The Divan Consort. Walicki has received grants and commissions from a variety of organizations and performing ensembles including the American Composers Forum, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the Kronos Quartet, the Mary Flagler Cary Trust, and Meet the Composer.
Growing up playing guitar in local Detroit garage bands, Walicki decided, at early age, he wanted to dedicate his life to music. His education included a two-year period in Germany as a Fulbright scholar where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann, and Rolf Hempel. He was also an active participant in master classes with Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and William Schumann. After returning from Germany, he studied with Jere Hutcheson at Michigan State University where he received his Ph.D. Walicki enjoys traveling and finds it to be a fantastic source of inspiration. After
spending a large amount of time in the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent, he has found these cultures to be particularly close to his heart. Together these experiences have made him a composer of diverse, accessible, physically, and spiritually moving, yet intellectually rigorous music. In addition to his music being presented in traditional concert music venues such as Lincoln Center in New York and the Liszt Academy in Budapest, his music has also been performed in new music clubs such as CBGB’s, the Knitting Factory, and countless cafes and storefronts throughout the world. Without compromising his values, he has made a point of writing music that relates to people and their situations. Walicki has collaborated with a variety of artists in the classical, pop, theater, film, and dance worlds, including Lydia Lunch, Dora Ohrenstein, the Doug Elkins Dance Company, Emmy winning producer/director Mark Obenhaus, American Opera Projects, Bermuda Triangle, Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Kronos Quartet, Divan Consort, and Ensemble Green. He was the founder and composer of the Ken Valitsky Ensemble, which included Regina Carter and Thomas Chapin as members. Previously, besides being on the faculty at New York University, Walicki has taught composition in Istanbul, Turkey at the Center for Advanced Music Techniques(MIAM), a department of Istanbul Technical University. Currently, he lives in Southern California with his son, and the family dogs. His music is available on Knitting Factory Works, C.R.I., CRS Artists, Channel Records, Albany Records and Ravello Records.
