Haiku - Miss Leaf Bug

What a beautiful piece of music. 

Some people shared a recording of this piece around on Facebook recently because of the low basses. I've met a few Russian bass singers and pretty ubiquitously they hit their lowest notes using a vocal rattle tuned to the note they're singing. My colleague Ben Johns of Chanticleer taught me how to do it and I've been getting better at it as the years go.

Mostly this began as an exploration of my new recording equipment, but when the sopranos have their solo on the second page the piece comes to life in a way I didn't expect. Really charming.

As always, every voice is mine, and no adjustments were made to the octaves. What you hear is what I sang and I had a blast recording it.

REKA is a rare sonic experience including numerous performers : six extraordinary soloists of rare ancient vocal traditions - from a Tibetan Böhn Lama to the Tenores guttural singing of Sardinia, two virtuoso percussionists playing a complex set of numerous gongs and the insides of a concert piano; a huge vocal “Crowd” formed by a heterogeneous group of participants with no need of previous musical knowledge - composed of the residents of the city in which the concerts take place, guided by coded gestures of the conductor and a “user friendly” graphic & verbal score. All these, coordinated simultaneously on the scene by two conductors.

Lingua-Palatal 1 (1997) utilizes a novel model of articulation that uses tongue tip to upper palate constrictions far in excess of traditional phonatory linguistics. It is a teaching piece developed from a new model of articulation that extends the 9-point phonetic model to over fifty points.

Michael Edgerton is an active composer with performances around the world. His compositions have received international prizes and recognition including the important German award, the Kompositionspreis der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart for his composition the Tempo Mental Rap, a series of six variations for guitar based upon a Steve Vai transcription of a Frank Zappa rap. Michael’s compositions utilize a broad range of musical influences such as European avant-garde, American experimentalism, progressive rock and world music. Since the mid-90s Michael’s compositions have been informed by scientific models and metaphors. Initially stemming from his studies with voice science and dynamical systems, he’s built a body of work that explores the integration of nonlinear concepts applied to sound production and compositional constraints. While the methods and systems he develops are often influenced by science, it is his intuition – his ear that gives birth to the music.

Michael is currently working as Professor of Artistic Research at Lund University/the Malmö Academy of Music in Sweden.

I am an actress, singer, VO Artist, and Audio-book Narrator. You can hear me on the soundtracks of Mars Attacks and Sleepy Hollow, as well as for Cosmopolitan’s Virtual Make-Overs and Kooshlings Toy Commercials.

I began my formal training in voice and theater at 16, and hold a BFA in music from California Institute of the Arts, where I studied baroque, new music, extended vocal techniques, Javanese Pshinden and Indian Sargam.  I received my Theatrical training at CalArts under Peter Sellars, as well as in Berlin under Anton Adasinski, and continue to study with the incomparable Chris Fields here in LA.

Music Projects of The Brothers Grimm | AJ Grimm Classical & Flamenco Guitar | BC Grimm Cello, Guqin, Pipa, Guzheng, Ableton | Groups: Brothers Grimm, Watercourse Q4, Lovely Socialite, Brain Grimmer, Stray Passage |  For over a decade the Brothers Grimm have been performing string music together on Guitar, Cello, and Chinese string instruments. They draw upon musical experiences abroad (BC: Chinese music in Hong Kong / AJ: Flamenco in Granada, Spain) in addition to contemporary classical music, forming flexible approaches in composition & improvisation.  In recent years, the Brothers Grimm have found a niche composing & performing live scores for dance, theater, & film.

Born in Jerusalem in 1977 and living in Milan, Yuval Avital investigates archetype and structure, ancestral and current human condition, nature and hybridity, ritual and science.
Both a polyhedric artist working with numerous mediums (paintings, photography, sculptures, sound installations, video art, performance) as a musical composer, Avital develops his works in a variety of spaces, including public venues, industrial archaeological sites, theaters and museums, challenging the traditional crystallized categories that separate the arts.
Each of Avital’s artworks is a unique experiential, poetic and emotional microcosm with its own identity. In his exhibitions, art events, immersive installations, total-operas, large-scale musical ‘rituals’, and concerts one can find dancers, contemporary music ensembles, masters of ancient cultures, recruited individuals or communities, multi-video projections, meditative tactile ambients, advanced technological instruments, archive materials, scientific data, sound-sculptures, large scale site specific murals and art films.
Avital’s artworks have been presented in 23 solo exhibitions and 12 group shows including MANIFESTA Biennial, Gwangju Biennale, Ostrale Dresden Biennale, Florence Biennale, Biennale Le Latitudini dell’Arte (Genoa/Gothenburg), Baths of Caracalla Rome, LOOP Festival - Barcelona, Palais de Tokyo, One World Trade Center New York, MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Rome, GAM Gallery of Modern Art - Turin, La Fabbrica de Cioccolato Foundation - Switzerland, Saint Antoine Church - Istanbul, Marino Marini Museum - Florence; National Science and Technology Museum “Leonardo da Vinci” – Milan, MUST Museums and Biscozzi | Rimabud Foundation - Lecce.

In 2022 Avital was nominated as ‘artist-of-the-year’ by Reggio-Parma Festival (Italy’s biggest festival), creating a huge meta-opera titled ‘Bestiario della Terra’ (=‘Bestiary of the Earth’), composed of 4 large scale monographic exhibitions, installations and total take overs of the two cities main theatres and Opera houses.
Avital created Italy’s biggest sound sculpture until now -  OPEN FENCE - a massive Sound- Sculpture of 320 tubular bells, 64 meters long and 4 meters high, playable by 80 visitors simultaneously (East End Studios, Milan).
He is also the author of the largest sound installation in Italian history - ALMA MATER -, covering an area of 1200 sqm with a “forest” of 140 loudspeakers, projections and light (Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan 2015).
His sound and visual artwork is HUMAN SIGNS, a Global participatory online dance and voice artwork, conceived in time of COVID-19 from March 2020 (ongoing), with the participation of over 200 artists from over 50 countries. It has been presented digitally in MANIFESTA 13 Marseille as a part of Real Utopias exhibition and as a large scale physical exhibition at LOOP Festival: City Screen 2021 in Barcelona.

Uran Apak is a multifaceted artist, voice explorer, and vocal coach. His musical essence is a fusion of electronica, vocal improvisation, and Anatolian psychedelic influences. With a blend of voice, beats, and loop station, Uran's live performances come alive as he spontaneously crafts songs, involving and engaging the audience in his creative process.

Uran's music projects have taken him on tours across the UK and international stages, and he has a discography of four albums and numerous singles. He has also earned recognition as an award-winning film composer.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Uran's passion lies in being a vocal coach, and he embarks on a mission to liberate voices and empower individuals to express their uniqueness while fostering a sense of belonging within a community. His approach is gentle yet playful, guiding people through mind and heart-expanding sound journeys, leaving them transformed in the process.
