Rob Barnhardt is a word nerd, irrational numbers enthusiast, avid disestablishmentarian, penny ante poker phenom and notorious sleep-aholic who sometimes dreams in Rock ‘n’ Roll. His parents were the star attraction in a daring high wire act that famously worked without a net. Both died while he was still young. He was sent to his grandmother's brothel where he was raised by prostitutes. Encouraged by a Jesuit priest, he taught himself guitar at 13, becoming an accomplished classical guitarist. He was high school valedictorian and went off to Julliard on a music scholarship. He kept a revolver and a rattlesnake in his dorm room, supplementing his scholarship with money he made selling drugs. He took advantage of the many parties at Juilliard and would often show up to them naked. He got kicked out of school for running an illegal numbers game and became an ambulance driver, hustling pool and playing in a jazz combo on the side. He met and fell in love with an Atlantic City showgirl on an ocean liner when he was 27. They jumped ship and married in Istanbul, exploring Eastern mythology and the occult while on their honeymoon. On a party dare gone awry, he fatally shot his new bride while attempting an ill conceived version of William Tell, missing the shot glass placed atop her head and instead shooting her in the eye. After serving seven years hard labor for manslaughter, he escaped from a Romanian prison and stole away on a southbound freighter. He found himself in Brisbane, living in a motel and living hand to mouth, furiously writing songs and drinking heavily. Between sporadic bar gigs, he took odd jobs at shipyards and funeral homes. He never remarried, preferring one night stands and prostitutes to a committed monogamous relationship. At this writing, he lives a hermit-like existence in a sparsely furnished farmhouse East of Omaha. And when he does venture out for musical engagements, he usually wants to be back at home.

YAZUKA emerged onto the electronic music landscape in 2021, a powerful collision of contrasting energies that has since redefined the boundaries between EDM, pop, and emotional storytelling. The duo—comprised of producer DJ VERTEX (Tyler Reeves) and vocalist AIKO NOVA (Emma Winters)—represents the magnetic fusion of Southern California's sun-soaked production techniques and raw, unfiltered emotional vulnerability.
Their origin story reads like modern music mythology: a chance meeting at a Portland underground showcase where VERTEX was performing a guest DJ set during his Pacific Northwest tour. AIKO, then performing solo under a different name, approached him after the show with a bold critique of his set and an even bolder proposition to collaborate. What began as a single-track experiment quickly evolved into a creative partnership that neither could ignore.
The name YAZUKA—a deliberate misspelling that nods to Japanese underground culture while creating their own distinct identity—reflects their outsider approach to mainstream electronic music. Their debut EP "Ghosts in Daylight" dropped in 2022, with the lead single "Walls Up" quickly accumulating over three million streams, attracting attention for its brutal honesty about modern relationship dynamics set against irresistible production.
Critics have struggled to categorize YAZUKA's sound, which seamlessly blends pulsating electronic beats with pop sensibilities and moments of surprising acoustic vulnerability. VERTEX's meticulous production provides the perfect foundation for AIKO's vocals, which range from ice-cold delivery to heart-wrenching emotional peaks—often within the same track.
Despite their relatively recent formation, YAZUKA has already secured spots at major festivals including Lightning in a Bottle and CRSSD, while maintaining credibility in the underground scene. Their live shows have become legendary for their visual elements and the palpable chemistry between the duo, with AIKO's commanding stage presence complemented by VERTEX's immersive soundscapes.
Based between Orange County and Portland, YAZUKA maintains a fiercely independent approach to their career, releasing music through VERTEX's Coastal Frequencies label while building a devoted fanbase through strategic releases and limited merchandise drops that routinely sell out within hours.
Their highly anticipated debut full-length album is set to release later this year, promising to further establish YAZUKA as pioneers of emotional electronic music that refuses to compromise authenticity for accessibility.
