In this episode of "Talking MEWShop," MEWShop talks with Cindy Mollo, ACE, to discuss the importance of the creative decision-making process in editing and her career journey in the film industry. They cover topics such as different editing tools, the importance of mentoring, tips on interviewing for post-production jobs, and Cindy's current project. The conversation also touches on AI in editing, the role of unions, and upcoming events and classes at MEWShop.

After graduating from Boston College, Cindy Mollo, ACE, began her career editing local commercials and industrial videos in Boston.  She soon moved to New York where she got the opportunity to edit the critically acclaimed dramas “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “Oz” for producers Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana.  She cut five seasons of “Homicide” and many TV pilots before deciding to move to Los Angeles.  

Once in LA, she was able to branch out into features including “The Book of Eli” starring Denzel Washington, directed by The Hughes Brothers; the HBO films “Path to Paradise” and “Boycott”; and “Broken City” directed by Allen Hughes and starring Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg.  She also cut Allen Hughes’ segment of the anthology film “New York, I Love You.”  Other feature credits include “Panic,” “The Sentinel,” “Texas Killing Fields,” “The Breakup Girl,” and “Juanita.”

Cindy’s plan has always been to “follow the writing” and that has led her to some of the best television shows: “Ozark,” “House of Cards,” “Mad Men,” and most recently “The Last of Us” for HBO.

In this episode of "Talking MEWShop," the team gets the opportunity to speak with four-time Emmy-winning Editor Stephanie Filo, ACE. Stephanie recounts how she was a dancer who transitioned to film editing after being inspired by the movie 'Seven'. She talks about her start in the industry as a night Assistant Editor. At Fancy Film, she developed her technical skills and received mentorship. She discusses collaborating post-Covid, as well as her work and development as an artist in post-production.


Stephanie Filo, ACE is a four-time Emmy, as well as Peabody and ACE Eddie Award-winning Film/Television Editor and activist based in Los Angeles, CA, and Sierra Leone, West Africa. She serves on the board for Girls Empowerment Sierra Leone, a social impact and feminist-based organization for Sierra Leonean girls aged 11-16. She is one of the co-founders of End Ebola Now, an organization created in 2014 to spread accurate information and awareness about the Ebola Virus and its impact through artistic community activism.

Aside from editing television and film, Stephanie spends much of her spare time producing and editing social action campaigns and documentaries, primarily focused on the rights of women and girls worldwide. Some of her notable campaigns include her work with the United Nations, the International Labour Organization, and the Obama White House Task Force's It's On Us campaign to combat campus sexual assault. Her charitable work has been featured in Forbes Magazine, Entertainment Tonight, Telegraph UK, Yahoo, Al Jazeera, XWhy Magazine, and various others. Her work on the news documentary series "Mental State" earned her an Emmy nomination for the episode "Aging Out" about youth aging out of the American foster care system. She earned an Emmy win for her editing on the Mental State episode "Separated" which covered ICE deportations, making herself and Nzinga Blake the first Sierra Leonean women to ever win an Emmy award. In 2021, she won a Primetime Emmy award for her work on HBO's "A Black Lady Sketch Show", making her team the first all-Women of Color editing team to take home the award for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming. In 2022, she made history again as a member of the first all-black editing team to be nominated for and win both an Emmy and an ACE Eddie for "A Black Lady Sketch Show". Most recently in 2023, she has made history again, as the first Picture Editor and first Black editor to ever be Emmy nominated for 3 different series at the same time.

She recalls benefiting from Manhattan Edit Workshop's knowledge and networking opportunities. Veronica speaks on how the workshop fosters collaboration and teaches essential editing techniques. She notes how networking proves vital for career growth, with former students helping each other find jobs. Veronica also talks about her career journey as she is now working as an Editor on the hit Netflix show "Emily in Paris."

Veronica Rutledge is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker, known for her editing work on the award-winning Hulu series, "Ramy", and the Emmy-nominated series, "Emily in Paris". Her feature editing work includes the romantic comedy, “At Midnight” (Paramount+), starring Diego Boneta, Monica Barbaro, and Anders Holm. As an assistant editor, she worked on the award-winning Showtime series, “The Affair'', and New Line Cinema’s “Isn’t it Romantic”, starring Rebel Wilson.

Her documentary short, “A Place on the Edge of Breath” an intimate and lyrical story about gender expression, was selected for the inaugural IF/Then x Hulu Documentary Lab and was an official selection at the New Orleans Film Festival, Montclair Film Festival, and Bushwick Film Festival, where it won best Documentary Short. She holds an MFA from the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema (Brooklyn College).

She shares her unique journey and insights into the world of film editing. Her dance background influences her editing style, especially in terms of movement and rhythm. She discusses her work on 'The Morning Show', the differences between LA and NY editing communities, and the benefits of hybrid work. She also highlights the importance of taking breaks, self-preparation, and upcoming projects.

Editor Carole Kravetz Aykanian was born and raised in France where she started her career as a modern dancer and choreographer. After moving to Los Angeles to study filmmaking, she graduated from the American Film Institute (AFI), where she received the Joseph and Olga Auerbach Award. She cut the neo-noir classic “One false Move” for director Carl Franklin and went on to collaborate with him on several projects among them “Devil In A Blue Dress” produced by Jonathan Demme. Carole also cut the cult classic “Ghost World” for Terry Zwigoff and started another collaboration with Richard Shepard for whom she cut several films among them “The Matador”. 

Her work in television is rich and varied from comedy to drama. Among the many prestigious series are “Big Love,” “The Affair,” “How to Make it in America,” and more recently “The Morning Show.” Carole expanded her creative skills by editing two Animated features: “The Little Prince” directed by Mark Osborne and “Entergalactic” directed by Fletcher Moules, currently up for an Emmy award for Outstanding Animated Program.

Sean Albertson's journey into the world of entertainment began amidst the vibrant arts scene of New York City. Born into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry—his father a versatile musician and film editor, and his mother a seasoned Production Manager and Assistant Director—Sean's earliest experiences revolved around music, acting, and the magic of filmmaking. As a young performer, he graced both stage and screen, even landing a role as an extra in the Academy Award-winning film, "Kramer vs. Kramer." Alongside his passion for performance, Sean found his rhythm in music, particularly drawn to percussion and vocals, which he honed while playing with various bands.

However, it was the transformative power of storytelling through film editing that ultimately captured Sean's imagination. Embracing his innate creativity and inherited talents, he transitioned seamlessly into the world of film post-production. With an insatiable appetite for learning and a commitment to mastering his craft, Sean has continually evolved as a storyteller, expanding his repertoire to include writing, producing, and harboring aspirations for directing.

With over three decades of experience in filmmaking, Sean's career boasts an impressive portfolio of more than 70 credits across diverse mediums. From compelling television movies and acclaimed series to blockbuster feature films and innovative mobile content, his work reflects a deep understanding of narrative structure and an unwavering dedication to cinematic excellence.
