As many know, my Grandfather, Eddie Lawhorne passed away in August of 2012. I wrote this piece for him because he asked me to. This piece did not sound too great with Finale sounds, thanks to the EastWest Play Library, I was able to composite more real sounds. I hope you enjoy!

An Old Man's Thoughts - A Sketch for Orchestra

This one is my first compositions, as in not improvisation. I was not the one to play it though (details below).

I composed with the help of Finale 2012, a really handy tool for musicians. Recording myself was a pain as I couldn't seem to keep the beat as steady as it needed to be so in the end you could say I cheated; the Finale software streamed MIDI to the piano and the piano recorded like usual. It can't tell the difference between keystrokes that are human made or otherwise. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the piece I wrote but didn't play.

El inicio de este arreglo es un homenaje/referencia al tocado tradicionalmente por la Banda Marcial del Colegio San Sebastián ya que por muchos años fue el único para Banda de Marcha. Es también un reconocimiento a mi maestro Rafael García Reynolds arreglista de dicha pieza y por mucho uno de los mejores compositores para Banda de Guatemala.

Overview: 

Music affects us all in a different way. No matter who we are, where we've come from, or what we'll be, music will guide us along that path. It is a language that speaks to the deepest part of us, gives us hope, makes us laugh and makes us cry, all without saying a single word. I began my journey into this world in Middle School. My friends and I decided to become trumpet players. 

That was how it started, but little did I know that I had taken the first steps on my life's journey, guided by fate toward my destiny. I never stopped learning. My high school, Cypress Lake for the Arts was where I evolved. There, I showed my Orchestra teacher some arrangements I had made for marching band and he asked me a question that would change everything: "Have you ever considered composing as a career?" 

That idea would become the seed for my future. That simple question transformed me from a simple trumpet player, to a creator of entire pieces spanning multiple instruments. I attended Stetson University for two years where I learned more about other instruments and played in ensembles and orchestras with my trumpet skills. It was here that I honed my skills and learned to play and compose for other instruments. I am proficient with trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, percussion and flugelhorn personally, but I have learned to arrange for all instruments and best play to their strengths, but I am always growing. 

I have started this journey, to create music for those who wish to bring their works, and their stories to life, so I can grow as a professional composer. So that I may constantly learn and become stronger and better in everything that I do. I know that I was put on this Earth to create music that any person from any culture or walk of life can enjoy. Knowing this, I want nothing more than to become the best I can be. 

I have a passion for marching bands performing contemporary music. I use this site to somewhat expose myself and my work. I realize that my style may not appeal to everyone, but somewhere, someone appreciates it. I'm a firm believer in balance within an ensemble, but I do want to feel the power as well. 

The arrangements I post a geared towards marching bands and marching "bandheads." I believe in 5th quarters and quality music, or music with substance. I'd like to think I post arrangements that are not, or have not been performed and/or thought of.
