My debut single, Karma, draws inspiration from the universal concept of justice and the unavoidable consequences of one's actions. The lyrics explore the darker sides of human behaviour, touching on themes of deceit, guilt and the relentless nature of truth. The song conveys the idea that, no matter how deeply one tries to bury their past, karma will always find a way to settle the score.
 
The songwriting process for Karma was a deeply reflective journey. The lyrics emerged as I pondered personal experiences and the actions of those around me. The recording process was equally intense with each vocal take aiming to capture the raw emotion and urgency of the message. Collaborating closely with Will Ryan Clift and Darkwood Studios, we developed a sound that mirrors the haunting and relentless force of karma.
 
Karma marks a pivotal moment in my career, symbolising the start of my path as an artist committed to confronting and expressing difficult truths. This single is more than just a song; it's a declaration of my dedication to authenticity and vulnerability in my music.

Mariela Espino Zuppa lives in Walyalup/Fremantle but is originally from Mexico. Her work aims to bridge divides—between ‘here’ and ‘there’, and ‘us’ and ‘them’—fostering curiosity, connection, and systems of reciprocal care. In this episode, she shares her journey emigrating to the USA and later, Australia. Her deep desire to find a place she could belong to, where she would finally be accepted, is confronted by Australia’s difficult past.

Truth Telling in Walyalup: Vaughan Wayne

This a fascinating song to listen to and appreciate.

It’s a very clever composition. 

At the base, there’s a great beat that sets the tone.

Is that a lead vocal? The lead vocal line is a harmony throughout the song.

Between the beats and the lead vocal, there are instruments following or contrasting with the main theme.

In and around the whole piece are the sounds of the wildlife we share this country with.

The song poses three main questions, universal questions, and vitally important questions.

“Whose land are you standing on?”
“What Nation what mob?”
“The sun’s burning, the world’s turning, the temperature’s rising, but no one’s learning.”

They are probably the biggest questions which need to be addressed in Australia.

The first two questions challenge your understanding of who you are and where you are.

These are existential questions, you cannot avoid them, and your answers to them establish your view of the world.

The third is a direct question on what we are facing.

Just as in the last song of Charlie’s that I reviewed this is an excellent piece, and I hope it gets much wider distribution.

I am standing in Wadawurrung country of the Kulin Nation, in the home of the Wathaurong people.

Always was, always will be.
