Last month, while Typhoon Yagi ravaged her hometown with flash floods that devastated thousands, Praise was oceans away in Hawaii, attending a prestigious program on environmental policy. Watching the destruction from afar, the irony of her situation was overwhelming. Now, more than ever, Praise feels a deep resolve to return home, to shield her community from the relentless impacts of climate-driven disasters. In this excerpt from the interview, Praise discusses her vision for a positive environmental future in her community. 

"I envision my community can make positive changes in the future. So, to make changes it is hard, like to change people's perspectives. Those perspectives have been rooted in their minds for a long time. So, I would like to change their mindset first. So, to take action, we need to change mindsets first. So for changing mindsets I envision with like minded youth we will advocate and educate. Environmental education, as much as we can. I would like to encourage everyone to stay eco-friendly. Like, to practice eco friendly behaviors. Because here in my town, wherever you go you can see plastic everywhere. And also in the downtown and in a populated place you can see piles of plastic trash. The government, the municipality, take action but people are still neglecting the rules and they keep doing those kinds of, like putting the trash beside the road, or something like that. So, I would like to change that kind of scenario in the future. And also I would like everyone to have more attention to climate change. People just care about themselves, but not the environment. So I want them to care and to pay attention to what's happening around them. So the recent flooding has, I think it might lead them with laws or ideas or thoughts to keep for the future. Because this flooding has left them with, "Oh we have to take care of our environment later." So I think this is kind of a small change, but later. But having a mindset is not enough. It's not enough. It will be good to follow with actionable practices later. So I want them to practice eco-friendly behaviors and also to pay more attention not only themselves, for their profit, but for the environment."

In this week’s episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Matt Chambers, a researcher at the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems at the University of Georgia, about managing floods with nature-based solutions. Chambers discusses the history of levee systems in the United States, the challenges that the widespread use of levees have presented, and approaches to floodplain management that help restore ecosystems while improving community resilience to flooding. He also discusses the economic analysis that informs floodplain management and the evolution of the US Army Corps of Engineers as a key decisionmaker in the management of US rivers.

When Friends Flip Out: How Much Is Too Much? | Aging, Diet Myths & Climate Chaos

Over the July 4th weekend, extreme rainfall in Central Texas caused catastrophic flooding along the Guadalupe River, leaving over 100 people dead and 160 people missing. Amidst the devastation, one question remains: in an area known as “flash flood alley,” why wasn’t there a flood warning system in place? This week, the Priorities Podcast reruns an episode from last year that centered on the alerts issued in another disaster, in North Carolina. A system there uses data from stream gauges, small devices that measure the water level and discharge of rivers and streams, for flood forecasting and disaster preparedness, which helped in the response to Hurricane Helene.

On Monday, ranking members of Congress sent a letter to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, demanding to know why the agency hasn’t responded to their recent inquiries about how its supporting state and local election offices. Democratic leaders Rep. Joseph D. Morelle and Sen. Alex Padilla wrote that they’re seeking “urgent updates” to the status of numerous election security policies and programs available under previous administrations.

A new California bill aims to address the harmful impacts of “companion” chatbots, artificial intelligence-powered systems designed to simulate human-like relationships and provide emotional support. The bill would require companies running companion chatbots to remind users that they’re talking to a machine, not a person and clearly state that chatbots may not be suitable for minors. If passed, it would be among the first laws in the country to regulate AI companions with clear safety standards and user protections.

In signing the state’s two-year budget last week, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont authorized funding for the Voting Rights Act. The act offers voter protections, including legal tools to fight discriminatory voting rules in court, expanded language assistance for voters who struggle with English and a data portal to host all of the state’s election results and demographic information.

88 years ago, Kentucky experienced a record-breaking flood that heavily impacted portions of the state. The Flood of 1937, now known as the “Great Flood” submerged over 70% of Louisville alone. 

During the disaster, the local government was worried about the spread of disease and created a quarantine barrier. To help with aid, individuals like Lt. Col. Joseph R. Gray were allowed to pass through this line in Louisville. 

After the damage, and loss of life, many places near rivers constructed flood walls and pumping stations to mitigate the impact of future disasters.

CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
