'Becoming Shai' is a collaborative creative endeavor taken on with love and care by Southside Shai and Gory Kas. This recording captures Shai's performance at Gül Gallery in NYC for Queer Mubarak on June 20, 2025. 

The performance contains a mix of original songs and poetry mapping Shai's journey into becoming herself over several years of personal troubles and tragedies (note: several songs may contain explicit language).

"Philadelphia Thief Who Stole a Shop-Vac Full of Hornets In for a Surprise"

In Northeast Philadelphia’s Frankford neighborhood, a thief unknowingly stole a shop-vac full of hornets. The vacuum belonged to Don Shump of the Philadelphia Bee Company, who had just finished removing a large nest of European hornets from a home. He left the vacuum in his truck bed overnight because the insects were still active inside. Unfortunately for the thief, that meant the stolen vacuum was not empty—but packed with angry hornets, possibly including hundreds of queens.

Shump later shared a sardonic warning on Facebook, noting that the vacuum “was filled with European hornet queens, the largest social stinging insects in the eastern United States,” and joked that he awaited the thief’s “unboxing video.” Experts from Penn State warn that such nests can contain up to 1,000 hornets, making this theft potentially a painful one. Locals are now half-jokingly waiting for a police report or emergency call about a man being chased by a swarm of furious hornets—a fitting case of instant karma for one very unlucky burglar.

Through this outlet he brings his songs to life utilizing a collective of his favorite musicians, producers, and engineers. Jonathan believes that for songs to be their best, it takes a village. Midwest Royal is that village.
