Visa handler om en ung jente som vil gifte seg, til tross for advarsler fra en eldre mann. Med naiv glede og en sterk vilje til å bestemme selv, insisterer hun på å følge hjertet sitt – men det siste verset bærer på en stillferdig uro: kanskje var det noe sant i rådene hun avviste?

Det finnes også en tydelig tematisk slektskap til Cornelis Vreeswijks "Balladen om herr Fredrik Åkare och den unga Cecilia Lind", som skildrer et lignende forhold mellom en eldre mann og en ung kvinne – og som, i likhet med denne sangen, leker med grensene mellom uskyld, lengsel og livsvisdom.

Denne nynorske versjonen – med ny tekst og tittel – er laget av Hallvardsson, og forsøker å føre tradisjonen videre i en ny, nordisk tone.

How can you maintain national pride and identity whilst away from your homeland? How can you feel equally a part of two differing countries and cultures yet not quite enough of either? How do you feel nostalgic about a place you never lived in, or a place that forced you to leave? How do you grieve for blood you never saw spilt, in wars fought years before your time?
 
How Often Do I Sigh is dedicated to all those away from a homeland, be it the result of economic, political or violent struggles, or simply for hope of something better.

From a young age, music has been an important part of my life. A native of The Netherlands, I began playing cornet at the age of six, and received my early vocal and brass musical education at The Salvation Army.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of being a part of some of the finest musical groups in the world. As a cornetist, I served as principal of The Salvation Army Amsterdam Staff Band, co-principal of Brass Band Schoonhoven, and as repiano for Brass Band Rijnmond. 

As a vocalist, I have enjoyed singing baritone/first bass as a member of The Salvation Army National Songsters (predecessor of the Amsterdam Staff Songsters), the a capella group – Timeless, the gospel group – Vocem, and the gospel ensemble Living Fire, which I was instrumental in creating. Currently I am co-founder and conductor of Vocal Group Sacred Desire, a Christian vocal group based in Rijnsburg, NL.

 As I developed as a musician, both through training at the conservatory in Groningen, The Netherlands, and as a participant in various musical groups, my interest in music composition also developed. In the early 1990's, I began writing for brass sextet, and later expanded my offerings to include vocal and brass ensembles.

I have had many highlights in my musical career. I would like to mention two in particular. 

I was asked to write a cornet solo for Tom Hutchinson (principal cornet of The Cory Band), commissioned by CU-Brass in 2019: Awake Thou That Sleepest. The same work had another succes in 2022 at the Dutch Open Brass Band Championships. Robert Ernest (principal cornet of the Provinciale Brass Band Groningen) won the "best soloist award" at that contest with Awake Thou That Sleepest.

I have three passions in my life:
1. music and being able to convey a message through my compositions,
2. Having Corine Moes as my best friend en musical partner in crime,
3. and most importantly, since 2014, being a father to the most beautiful daughter in the world!
