Rosalind Robinson (00:00): Hi, my name is Rosalind Robinson. I am a member of the African American Quilters of Baltimore. I came to the Peale Museum as a result of my involvement in the production of two quilts that are installed here at the Peale Museum. And I was one of a team of three ladies of the African American quilters of Baltimore who were invited to have a show here. Our show is called "Quilt Connections: A Sisterhood in Cloth," and I'm absolutely delighted to be a part of this show, which is running until the end of January, 2023.

(00:59): I have five pieces in the show and I'm going to begin talking about them. There are five distinctly different pieces so that you can get a flavor of the diverse work that I do. The first is done with African wax prints and boutiques and it's called a strip quilt. And it's done on set in diagonal blocks. And each block is two different colors. So when the blocks are assembled together, they create a diamond design in two colorways, and you will have to see it to experience how this happens. But it was intentional to create these diamonds that are created by a block, which is created with two different colors. And this quilt is called "Makena," made with boutiques and African wax prints.

Rosalind Robinson (00:00): And the next quilt is, comes from my black and white series. I love black and white. It's called "Edge of Reality." It's red, black, and white strips. And what I really love about this quilt is the quilting. I am sometimes moved by the things in my environment.

(00:32): It can be a pattern on the floor, it can be grain lines and wood. This time it was an ice sculpture inside of a volcano, a subterranean volcano in Iceland which is where I was.

(00:58): On a trip in Iceland and I saw these beautiful ice sculptures that were clear and very rounded. And I took pictures of them and said, "I'm going to quilt that shape into a quilt." And that's what you see on the edge of reality. And when you're on the top of the Earth, like an island, you feel like you're on the edge of reality.

Rosalind Robinson (00:00): All right. The third quilt is a "novelty quilt." You might ask, well, what is a novelty quilt? A novelty quilt is a single subject fabric. Maybe that fabric is about food. Maybe it's about cactus, various kinds of cactus plants. Maybe it's about cowboys and all the things that would make up a cowboy like this quilt.

(00:36): This is a cowboy quilt, and I've dressed it just like a cowboy with hats at the top and boots at the bottom, and all the accoutrements of a cowboy. I hope you come to see him or her. I think it's a him though. It can be whatever you want it to be. And it is called "Cowboy Components." Yes, this is called "Cowboy Components," parts of a Cowboy.

Rosalind Robinson (00:00): The next quilt is called "The Patio." I love being outside on the patio, and this just reminds me of flowers and a design patio and sunshine and warmth, and I hope that you get that same feeling when you see this quilt. It's just set just like a planned garden, and I hope that you get warm fuzzy feelings and smell the aroma of beautiful flowers when you see it.

Rosalind Robinson (00:00): Next quilt. Moving from Iceland, I'm going to take you into the warmth of sunshine, and with the last quilt, which I call "Mama." I think that "Mama" evokes warmth. It's English paper piece daisies, or hexagons, that's what they are. Hexagon daisies. And all the daisies are hand-stitched together, then the daisies are hand-stitched onto a piece of white cloth, and then the white cloth are sewn together as blocks, and assembled into this quilt.

(00:56): But there's a lot of hand stitching in this quilt. And each of the center hexagons, they're yellow centers, which evoke warmth, and warm feelings of a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, godmother, some person in your life who gave you comfort and warmth. And that's what I want you to feel when you see this quilt. It's called "Mama." And that concludes my voice tour of my exhibition at the Peale, and I hope that you come to see it. I am overjoyed at having an exhibition here at the Peale. I'm humbly overjoyed, I'm thankful, and I love this space, and I'm very thankful to be here.

Brunem Warshaw (they/them) is a clinical herbalist, medicine-maker, and educator currently based in Tennessee, who weaves scientific and intuitive approaches together to support people in healing themselves with the assistance of plant medicines. Their clinical herbalism practice Well Deep Remedies focuses on providing support with trauma recovery, addiction, sexual health, and complex chronic illness. Brunem is passionate about developing a peoples’ science of the autonomic nervous system, including the integration of polyvagal theory with herbs to cultivate emotional resilience.

The North Carolina Heritage Awards are coming back!

In this episode, we head to Wendell, NC, just east of Raleigh, where Neal Thomas has been making white oak baskets for more than half a century.

Neal and his brothers learned to make traditional white oak baskets from a man in Johnston County named Herman Holder, but today he is one of very few basket makers left who still harvests his own wood from trees and prepares each splint by hand.

Meet 2023 Heritage Award Honoree Rhonda Gouge

In this episode, we head West to the Qualla Boundary, the land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, where Luther “Butch” Goings and Lydia Louise Goings share a life of dedication to craft and culture.

Butch was a student of the renowned carver Amanda Crowe, who received the North Carolina Heritage Award in the year 2000. Louise was taught by her mother, the white oak basketmaker Emma Taylor, who was among the first to receive the award in 1989.

Today the couple are known for their mastery and teaching of Cherokee carving and basket making traditions, and for their steady, humble, commitment to service in their community.

Born in Ararat, Virginia, and residing in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Richard Bowman has lived his life on both sides of the state line. Richard was inspired to teach himself the fiddle the first time he heard Tommy Jarrell playing on the Merry Go Round, a long-running old-time music program on Mount Airy’s famed radio station, WPAQ. Fifty years later, he is one of the region’s most beloved fiddlers at dances and conventions, carrying on the tunes he learned from just beyond his front door.

I categorize my tracks as "psychedelic folk-rock avant-garde electronic ambient experimental". The recordings appear to be a cross between the styles of Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Beck, The The (Matt Johnson), late 1960s psychedelic rock/folk, new age, industrial, John Fahey, 1980s British alternative rock, Kevin Ayers, 1990s U2, Kraftwerk, a hopeful anti-bleak version of Radiohead, contemporary electronica, late 1970s David Bowie, post-punk, a more energetic bit of Elliott Smith, 1980s New Wave pop, noise rock, and a positive incarnation of Depeche Mode.  

What does my music sound like to you?

Here are what I see as the biggest influences on what I have put together as a songwriter/musician:

Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The The (Matt Johnson), Rush, The Who, psychedelic/hippie rock from late 60s, The Doors, 80s/90s Brit alt rock, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, The Kinks, Guns N' Roses, Brian Eno, Keith Green, Jeff Buckley, atmospheric music, Pearl Jam, Elvis Presley, Budgie, many Windham Hill artists, Tori Amos, late 60s/70s/80s classic rock, James Brown, Enya, The Verve, John Lennon, INXS, 70s Funk, Elton John, Beethoven, electronic music that sounds like rock, Marc Bolan (T-Rex), Bob Dylan, Metallica, The Chemical Brothers, Stone Temple Pilots, Missing Persons, John Williams, Kelley Stoltz, The Crystal Method, Of Montreal, Nirvana, Tears for Fears, Billy Joel, Megadeth, The Cars, Franz Schubert (piano, especially his impromptu compositions) and movie soundtracks "The Mission," "A Beautiful Mind", "Amistad", "Braveheart", "Gladiator", "The Firm", "Dances With Wolves" and "The Ghost and the Darkness".

In my mid-twenties, I began making these tunes after abandoning all former childhood creative activities in my teenage and young adult years: bit.ly/2F2dxVP. I am grateful that I persevered during the past 20 years or so, during which I committed myself to learning or relearning how to play instruments, compose songs, craft poetry/lyrics, sing, and record at home.  My level of respect for professional musicians and artists grew exponentially as I realized just how difficult this work can be.  Along the path of this personal musical evolution, I experienced a lot of encouragement and inspiration from countless friends, musicians/artists, family, books, concerts, and documentaries.
