Epilogue: Knowing Jesus and His Word - 240413

Jackie Parks, pastor of South Scottsdale Presbyterian church, invites us to rethink our understanding of love through the lens of God’s radical, life-changing love. Drawing from 1 John 4:7-21, we’re reminded that "God is love" and that we’re called to reflect His love by loving others. This isn’t just sentimental or convenient love—it’s agape love, selfless and sacrificial. The parable of the Good Samaritan brings this to life, showing that true love is bold, inconvenient, and costly. Following Jesus means allowing Him to "rearrange the furniture" of our lives, challenging us to step beyond our comfort zones and embody His love in tangible ways. This message encourages us to examine how we’re living out God’s mission and whether our lives truly reflect the power of His transformative love.

This week, we are challenged to rethink our perception of Jesus and His kingdom as we delve into Matthew 16:21-26, where Peter misunderstands Jesus' mission. We're reminded that even when we think we have Jesus figured out, we might be missing crucial aspects of His message. The cross, often seen as a symbol of comfort, is reframed as a call to radical self-denial and sacrificial love. We're invited to consider where we might be putting ourselves in front of Jesus, inadvertently becoming stumbling blocks to His work. The message encourages us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus - not as acts of self-hatred, but as pathways to discovering our true selves. This teaching pushes us to examine our lives and ask: Where do we need to decentralize ourselves and let Jesus be Lord?

They began full-time ministry with an evangelistic tour throughout the USA and Canada, encouraging believers in the local church for outreach. This was followed by 3 years of evangelistic tours to 13 countries throughout Europe, serving with Victory Outreach Ministries based in Amsterdam, Holland. In 1990, Kurt and Valerie followed God’s call into pastoral ministry with a church plant to the city of Lelystad, in the Netherlands. Completing 7 fruitful years on the mission field for the Kingdom, they returned home to continue pastoral work in different regions of the USA. Since 2011, Kurt & Valerie are super blessed to be serving Jesus with Harvest Time Church in their hometown of San Diego, coming full circle from their ministry beginnings!

Pastor Kurt enjoys working with Marketplace Chaplains, sharing Christ’s message of hope with corporate business leaders in San Diego. He also serves as Chaplain with Teen Challenge USA many years working with those suffering from drug and alcohol dependency. Both Kurt and Valerie are ordained ministers with the SoCal Network Assemblies of God. Kurt received his B.A. degree and master’s in Theology. Valerie has a bachelor’s degree in Theology, and is currently studying in the master’s program for an M.Th. with Christian Bible College and Seminary in Blue Springs, MO. She is passionate for mental, physical, spiritual health and well-being for every individual; certified with the Cleveland Clinic , previously coaching women throughout Riverside and San Diego counties as a Fitness & Dietary Counselor. Kurt enjoys skiing and water sports, including surfing and their family loves hiking together in the great San Diego mountains.  They have two adult children.

This podcast is recorded in my car as I drive to work. I do it this way so that I can work through ideas organically without the luxury of a Bible or any other books to fall back on. This way I know how I sound when I talk on these subjects and I can listen back to what I said and see the path and progression of my own theology and understanding of Jesus. I do not edit so as to keep discussions as raw and real as possible, although I do pause from time to time, like when I recently spilled my coffee or when I get a call.
