In this Bell Work Talk, Kory will talk about addiction and how it is a very stigmatized disease. In his last podcast, he defined addiction, neurobiology of addiction, discussed brain failure, and how the cravings of addiction change our body.  He will now discuss the harm reduction strategies and treatment for substance use disorder. 

Addiction can happen to anyone, and we must really learn the science behind it, and reduce the stigma that this group faces.  Many times patients with addictions will avoid medical care because of the stigma that they often receive.

Kory Scheideman is an Emergency Department nurse manager that has been in the emergency world for over 18 years as a nurse, and prior to that an EMT/Fire Fighter for 5 years.  For the last 6 years, Kory has helped develop an ALTO program, Medication Assisted Treatment program in 6 different Emergency Departments.  He also is an active community member and sits on the Northern Colorado Harm Reduction Alliance, Northern Colorado Collaborative for Addiction and Recovery Supports, and the Colorado Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Quality, Safety and Injury Prevention Committee Chair. He was recently awarded a “Rethinking Addiction and Recovery Event” Award and the Colorado ENA Inspire award in 2023 for his work in the community and the Colorado ENA. Kory was also inducted in the Academy of Emergency Nurses earlier this month for the work with addiction medicine among Emergency Nurses Association and community. Kory is also engaged with the Naloxone Project as a Nurse Leader.

Dr. Christina Vela, CEO of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, has 20+ years of human and social service experience that includes administering foster care, homeless, and supportive services to children, transition age-youth, and their families.

She has worked at the non-profit level as the Executive Director and the Chief Program Officer for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, a Manager for the Clark County Department of Family Services, Social Services Program Specialist for the State of Nevada and a Program Specialist for the Federal Administration for Children and Families-Children’s Bureau in Washington DC.  More recently, Christina has been the Coordinator for the State of Nevada Coalition to Prevent the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. Christina holds her Doctorate in Public Policy and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She is a proud alumnus of Emerge Nevada, Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2013, Jameson Fellows and Clark County Leadership Academy.

In this Bell Work Talk, Rachel Lapp will discuss harm reduction as it pertains to Forensic Nursing Practice.

Rachel is a forensic nurse from Chicago, Illinois. She has been a registered nurse for 11 years. Her background is in emergency and trauma nursing. She began her journey into forensic nursing 7 years ago when she decided to become a sexual assault nurse examiner. Rachel is a board-certified emergency nurse, board-certified trauma nurse, licensed trauma nurse specialist, and is a nationally certified adult/adolescent sexual assault nurse examiner.

Rachel is currently the Forensic Nurse Examiner Program Manager for Advocate Health’s Central Chicagoland Region. Rachel oversees three urban hospital sites and leads a team of nearly 60 forensic nurses who care for patients who are survivors of sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence. Rachel has been a member of the Academy of Forensic Nursing since 2018. She is currently serving on the Academy of Forensic Nursing’s board of directors and is the chair of the Harm Reduction Special Interest Group (SIG).

Episode 65: Harm Reduction in the context of Forensic Nursing

There is an international “gold standard” for investigating suspicious deaths — it’s called the Minnesota Protocol.

Adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and 1991, the Minnesota Protocol outlines best practice for death investigations, particularly when government agents may have done the killing or neglected the duty to investigate.

Forensic investigators have used the Minnesota Protocol to exhume mass graves in Peru (pictured), identify the remains of anti-apartheid activists who disappeared in South Africa, and convict General Efraín Ríos Montt of genocide in Guatemala. 

Today the protocol is being translated into Ukrainian for use by forensic specialists, at the urging of the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions. The Special Rapporteur is promoting global implementation of the protocol to address human rights violations.

Minnesota lawyers and medical examiners volunteered to draft the protocol in partnership with international experts in the 1980s. The pro bono lawyers’ committee went on to become The Advocates for Human Rights, which relies on more than 800 volunteers. 

A new Human Rights Archive at the University of Minnesota highlights the state’s contributions to the human rights movement and preserves early drafts of the Minnesota Protocol.

Forensics (Definitive Edition)

Scene of the Crime is a rather extreme departure from what I normally do with a song. Thing is, I’m a big concept person. As it turns out, my partner and I are regular crime show watchers. We only watch the true stuff (documentaries) and we particularly like the shows with actual video of crimes and crime scene investigations.  We love the challenge of solving each case. We find forensic analysis fascinating and real interrogations freaky. We really like the more complex forensic angles. There’s some pretty bad-ass problem solving going on out there!

So… why not a song that captured that? Sure! Hence we have Scene of the Crime, a somewhat tongue-in-cheek tribute to these real crime shows and to the complex process of investigating serious crimes. It’s the scene of the crime, baby, and all the clues are there! All the investigators have to do is find them…

Since childhood, my passion for sound was sparked by legends like The Beatles and Pink Floyd, thanks to my father and the magic of discovery online. During my teenage years, music and parties became inseparable from who I was.

MinneCulture is KFAI’s award-winning audio storytelling program. We produce audio documentaries exploring Minnesota’s art, culture, and history — stories about musical sensations, small town heroes, cultural icons, local lore, and everything in between.

I’m a singer-songwriter rock music addict. My style is my own interpretation of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s hard rock and metal I have always loved. I’ve been writing my entire life (not music) but I now use that experience to craft compelling lyrics. 

My songs play host to anger, pain, fear, resentment, rejection, change, challenge, hope, love, tolerance and understanding - the dominant themes in my life. I write about what I have experienced, observed and dared to dream.

My journey has been everything but normal. I started learning guitar at the age of 62 after stage 4 bone cancer completely rearranged my life and my reality. It broke me very badly (13 fractures, open back surgery) physically and mentally. It’s taken years to get back to a decent place with function.  Music has been (and still is) an essential part of my survival and recovery. When cancer first hit, my family got me an acoustic guitar. I started learning open chords. As I healed I played more, eventually improving. I started writing my own music.

Now look at me! I write music, produce music, and perform locally both solo and as a band. Oh, how I love playing my music! It motivates and inspires me! Music has been the guiding light leading me through the darkness. It has helped fill the void left from the devastation of the cancer, the surgeries and other complications. 

I love what I do! But it is also my hope that you enjoy my songs too. I sure hope you do!

Terry Rocks the Universe

ÆSTR, France-based DJ & Producer, began her artistic journey in 2010, as Yshar : a professional dancer and musician in electro-world live projects.
Previously a bass player in a psyche-rock band in Paris, she performed for Hadra Festival and toured across France and Europe.

In 2011, she began producing tracks as ÆSTR, driven by her love for industrial, ambient and techno music. She fused it with psytrance to create psytechno tracks. 
She began djing in 2017 in the french cradle of electronic music : Grenoble.

Now based in Lyon, she has established her DJ set signature : a strong foundation in Industrial Techno, enhanced by the harshness of rhythmic Noise, Dark Techno and the sexy groove of EBM. She creates an organic dialogue, punctuated by atmospheric vocals and metallic percussion. 
Her dance and music background allows her to create a mesmerizing, surprising and brutal experience. 
Playing with tension, emotions, ÆSTR’s sets are infused with revolt. 
She shared line-up with Ancient Methods, Crystal Geometry, and recently with The Hacker for his curated event with Legowelt.
