Friday April 11 was the Global Climate Strike called by Fridays For Future, the group started by Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. More than 50 people, mainly students, demonstrated at the State Capitol in Albany. We hear music by Terri Roben; Ryan, the local FFF organizer; Mark Dunlea of PAUSE/350 Albany and GELF (Green Education and Legal Fund); Kelsey from UAlbany; Vena; Matt Oill from XR and Socialist Alternative; and Hannah and RPI Sunrise. With President Trump having declared war on the transition to clean, renewable energy, it is critical that state lawmakers and Governor Hochul reverse course and include major climate measures in the state budget, starting with NY Heat, GAP, and the Renewable Capitol Act. Many spoke about the need to oppose capitalism and colonialism.

President Trump won election to his second term promising an “American Energy Dominance” agenda that would stimulate more oil drilling and cut the price of energy in half for consumers.  Despite pledges of dramatic regulatory cuts, after his first quarter in office, neither is happening. Drilling is down compared to the first quarter of 2024 and gasoline prices are up, according to data from the Trump Administration. Why is “Drill, Baby, Drill” backfiring? Earlier this month, Third Act, New York Communities for Change, and other climate groups held a forum with Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado and author / activist Bill McKibben to discuss energy affordability and climate solutions in New York. We hear their responses to questions about the need to build public renewable energy and opposing the efforts by President Trump to expand natural gas infrastructure in New York.

Hundreds of climate activists gathered outside the State Assembly on Thursday, June 5, to urge lawmakers to pass the NY Heat Act. The bill would align the policies of state agencies with the climate measures included in the CLCPA, the state’s climate law, including ending the massive subsidy involved in providing free gas hookups if within 100 feet of an existing gas line. It would also cap the utility bills of low-income New Yorkers at 6% of their income. In recent days lawmakers have floated the idea of amending the bill to allow utilities to opt out in order to deal with the opposition of National Fuels in Western NY which only provides gas. We hear from Laura Shindell of Food and Water Watch; Roger Downes of the state Sierra Club; Senator Liz Kruger, one of the main co-sponsors; Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha; Assemblymember Anna Kelles on cap and invest; and Assemblymember JoAnne Simon, the other co-lead sponsor of NY Heat. Hundreds Make Last Minute Push for NY HEAT

Rather than passing the full NY Heat Act, the Assembly instead just passed the elimination of the gas subsidy called the “100-ft rule”. By repealing this rule, utility companies will no longer be required to pay for gas infrastructure to within 100 feet of a building upon a developer’s request, costs that the utilities pass along to New Yorkers via their utility bills. On Thursday June 26, NY Divest from Death, Extinction Rebellion of the Capital Region, and the Upper Hudson Valley chapter of Codepink rallied outside NYS Comptroller DiNapoli’s office on State street in downtown Albany to demand an end to investing NY retirement funds in Israeli bonds that help funds the Netanyahu government’s genocide in Gaza and $5 billion in large fossil fuel companies that are driving global companies. We hear from Arthur with Code Pink; Eyad Alkarubi from the Palestinian Rights Committee; Xan Plymale of Divest from Death; and Wendy Dwyer and Tom Ellis (PRC). The text examines historical debates surrounding Gold's ideas, including his earlier work on ear physiology and the Earth's rotational axis, both of which initially faced skepticism but later found supporting evidence. The sources detail the evidence for deep-earth gas, such as refilling reservoirs and the association of hydrocarbons with helium, while also discussing how subsurface microbial life, nourished by these hydrocarbons, could explain the presence of biological molecules in oil and coal. Furthermore, the text suggests this theory offers new perspectives on earthquake phenomena and the potential for extraterrestrial life in other planetary bodies with similar subsurface conditions.

Climate activists several years ago successfully to get a moratorium on the use of fossil fueled power plants for cryptomining while an environmental impact assessment was completed by the NYS DEC (Dept. of Environmental Conservation). While the moratorium has expired, the draft Environmental Impact Statement was recently released. Irene Weiser of Fossil Free Tompkins discusses the EIS with Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

The $4 trillion Republican spending bill, signed by President Trump on July Fourth, is packed with giveaways to the oil and gas industry. These include tax breaks, opening more public lands and offshore acres to drilling, and a lowering of royalty rates that oil and gas companies must pay for extracting fuel from government lands. Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful” bill is also full of ugly ironies, including this one: While Trump campaigned on lowering energy prices for consumers, his spending bill is expected to raise average household energy costs by about $280 per year, in part because it slashes support for wind and solar, which are some of the cheapest forms of energy. Breaking Down the Fossil Fuel Handouts in Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill”

On this show, we hear excerpts from a keynote talk from the Bioneers 2024 Conference in Berkeley, California by Taylor Brobry, Activist and Author of Boys and Oil, Growing Up Gay in a Fractured Land. We then will hear what is called a climate thinker, Gabrielle Walker from her TED Talk on Carbon Capture. Following that, host Jack Eidt's 2024 interview with energy expert and climate and environmental activist Morey Wolfson.


Most of us understand we are in a global climate emergency. Data confirmed last month was the hottest May on record, putting the Earth on a 12-month streak of record-breaking temperatures. What we need is to immediately transition away from the burning of fossil fuels toward renewable power sources, but also a focus on more efficient energy use, and most importantly, a comprehensive plan for massive conservation and rethinking the way we do business. But global corporations want to continue with their present business model focused on coal, oil, fossil gas, ethanol, and industrial agro-fueled biodiesel. And the way they do it is advancing solutions like Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage.

Taylor Brorby [https://taylorbrorby.com/] grew in the dynamic shortgrass prairie of western North Dakota, a youth that coincided with the brutal physical and psychic scarring of his surroundings by the coal and oil industry, a fate not made any easier by being a young gay boy enthralled by classical music, art, fishing, and poetry. From here, Taylor became a poet, writer and dedicated activist, an eloquent critic of the fossil fuel industry, penning, among other works, the memoir: Boys and Oil: Growing Up Gay in a Fractured Land, the essays in Civil Disobedience, and co-editing: Fracture: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking in America. 

Morey Wolfson has spent his career in energy and environmental policy. He is a Former Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) regulator, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) employee, and governors’ energy policy advisor.

Hochul At State Fair Pushed on Nukes, Fossil Fuels

In this week’s episode, host Daniel Raimi discusses fossil fuel subsidies with Paasha Mahdavi, an associate professor and cofounder of the 2035 Initiative at the University of California, Santa Barbara. They talk about how subsidies on goods such as gasoline and diesel lead to lower prices for consumers. However, because these subsidies encourage the use of fossil fuels, reforming such policies is important when promoting the use of renewable energy. Mahdavi explores why many attempts to reform fossil fuel subsidies have failed, and he proposes potential avenues for addressing the weaknesses of reforms which could lead to failure of the subsidies.
