Island Wild

A binaural soundscape, originally composed as an immersive soundtrack in Dolby Atmos for the short film “Clydebuilt” (2021), sonifies the rich history of Glasgow’s shipbuilding industry. Inspired by the documentaries “Seawards the Great Ships” (Harris, 1961) and “The Men Who Built the Liners” (BBC4, 2009), the piece captures the echoes of the River Clyde’s industrial past. This musique concrète-inspired soundscape weaves together found sounds, field recordings, and archival audio, evoking the spirit of the workers and the rhythmic pulse of the shipyards, once a hub of craftsmanship and industry.

Jamuary 2025 - day 3 "furious" - what do you want a person that makes you furious to hear?"
in the spirit of jamuary I worked as much before the dawn of the 4th, that still counts as day 3 right?

The found sounds are from videos of walking in and waiting at (the doors/incoming train) train platform of the NYC subway.

Day 16. I put the capo on the 8th fret and plucked the strings on the other side of it. Putting it into a sampler I found a little pattern that I liked, so I resampled it and put it in simpler so I could use the warp setting. Built the rest of the song around that with the intention of capturing a brighter more magical mood than my previous two.

Jamuary 16th 2025 Reflections of a Distant Memory

Day 19. Recorded my journey home on the tram a couple of nights ago, and the washing machine rhythmically chugging along. I made instruments from the beeping of the tram doors, and of a reversing truck from the construction taking place next door.

Jamuary 19th 2025 Murmuring

Day 20. I recorded the rattling of a Santa lamp that swirls little foam pieces around like a snow globe. It's a little broken so depending on the angle it can make different sounds. One of the later percussion rhythms is made from a sliced sample of one of these sounds, the other two I placed as textured background. I wanted fast paced today. Not the best mixing, but not the worst either!

Day 28. Instruments are made from a microwave humming, the phone that interupted that recording, a plastic bag, a violin recording, my voice, and the construction from next door that's driving me mad! The title comes from the book 'Beautiful Star' by Yukio Mishima.

Paul White Biog
Paul White initially trained in electronics at The Royal Radar Establishment in Malvern then went on to work with Malvern Instruments, a company specialising in laser analysis equipment, before moving into technical writing. 

He joined the Sound On Sound team in 1991 where he became Editor In Chief, a position he held for many years before recently becoming Executive Editor. Paul has written more than 20 recording and music technology textbooks, the latest being The Producer’s Manual.

Having established his own multitrack home studio in the 1980s he’s worked with many notable names including Bert Jansch and Gordon Giltrap. He’s played in various bands over the years and currently collaborates with Malvern musician Mark Soden, under the name of Cydonia Collective. Paul still performs live claiming that as he has suffered for his music he doesn’t see why everyone else shouldn’t too!
