Bonus: Baseless Theories I

In this captivating double portrait, the focus is on George Dyer, Bacon's long-time love, casually seated in a swivel chair facing a mirror perched on an unusual pedestal cabinet. Jon Repetti - Deleuze's Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation

This week, Charles Stivale and Dan Smith returned to the podcast to discuss a series of lectures Deleuze delivered titled "Painting and the Question of Concepts". They also shared a bit about their experience with the Deleuze Seminars project hosted by Purdue University.

The team discussed the introduction of a new feature on Zoom that can summarize discussions. They also discussed the difference between a summary and a transcription, with Taylor noting that the summary feature was not as detailed as a transcription. The conversation then moved to a discussion about a future book based on revised transcripts of Deleuze's 1981 painting seminars. The team also discussed the content of the cinema books and their translations, as well as the author's view on modern art and philosophy. The discussion ended with Taylor bringing up the idea of practicing the act of deletion in pre-pictorial art.
Summary

Charles' research interests include 19th-century French novels, contemporary critical theory and cultural studies, and writings of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as well as serving as co-director, with Prof. Daniel W. Smith, of the Purdue University Deleuze Seminars web site, developing transcriptions and translations of Deleuze's university seminars.

Dan Smith is professor of philosophy at Purdue University. He is the author of Essays on Deleuze (Edinburgh 2012) and editor of the Cambridge Companion to Deleuze (2012, with Henry Somers Hall); Deleuze and Ethics (2011, with Nathan Jun); and Gilles Deleuze: Image and Text (2009, with Eugene W. Holland and Charles J. Stivale). He is also the translator, from the French, of books by Gilles Deleuze, Pierre Klossowski, Isabelle Stengers, and Michel Serres.

Francis Bacon, Novum Oraganum - The Idols Of The Market - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the early modern philosopher Francis Bacon's work Novum Organum, specifically the section in book 1 covering the "four idols of the human mind"

This episode focuses specifically on his description of the fourth type of idol, those of the theater, which derive from either entire philosophical systems, which Bacon likens to fictions and plays, or from perverted rules of demonstration,  or from too exclusive of a focus on one aspect or element of a science. Bacon divides the three kinds of philosophies he criticizes into sophistic (exemplified by Aristotle), empiric, and superstitious or theological (exemplified by Plato).

Francis Bacon, Novum Oraganum - The Idols Of The Theater - Sadler's Lectures

The 20th Century was the age of the Manifesto. No longer waiting to be retrospectively defined by critics and historians, writers like F.T.Marinetti, Tristan Tzara and Andre Breton took their identities, goals and methods into their own hands. They would decide what they are and how the world should be. Through manifestos, art and political movements would have a core set of documents that outlined their proposals, criticisms and practical solutions to problems they saw.

Yet, too few of us today are aware of the profound changes these movements and manifestos had. That’s where we come in. We’ll be selecting manifestos from the 20th century: examining their form and rhetoric, the ideas within them, offering judgments, and tracing history, as well as engaging with the art, music and writing these manifestos would inspire. 

We aim to provide a copy of the core works that we look at in the description of each episode, so you can follow us.
