I have been living abroad for just over 5 years now. I adore my family and this to me is a bit of a love letter to them. A song to let them know I’m okay and I do think about them often. I hope this song will comfort anyone else who is away from and missing their family.

Pulled this from Friday's stream, this is one of those moments where the music takes over and this theme emerged. All the improv this week was restricted to guitar only, as all my quarter inch cords had broken except one. So I didn't have my delay pedal that is typically how I explore like this.

There's something about live improvisation that captures the essence of what I'm exploring with Khoma Brut, and helps create space where psychedelic folk meets experimental textures, where traditional song structures dissolve into pure sonic relationship and then evolve into songs. This particular improvisation came between Revolution Blues (Neil Young) and you can hear, at the very end, how it transitions into E major, leading to a cover of The Butcher, by Leonard Cohen. These Friday streams have become laboratories for discovering what wants to emerge.

Hailing from a small Icelandic fishing community in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. Dave Helgi Johan moved to Byron Bay in 2019 to actively pursue music full time as a solo musician while playing and collaborating with many local artists. Dave has played bass for local favourite Luke Morris and performs and records with Patrick O’Rielly among others.

Dave has performed and toured over the last decade in countless acts. After recording and releasing a handful of albums and music videos in past groups he has finally committed himself to a solo career. He has performed with the likes of Mac Demarco, The Bros. Landreth, Kim Churchill, PS I Love You and The Mowgli’s. He has played many music festivals including Canada Music Week, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Byron Bay Surf Festival, Airlie Beach Music Festival and more.
