Chuck has Covid pt. 2: Technoauthoritarian Frontiers / Quinn Slobodian & Greg Grandin

250 years ago this week, Boonesborough was founded by Daniel Boone, and a party of frontiersmen and enslaved African Americans. It was Kentucky’s second Anglo American settlement, that was to become a fortified outpost during the Revolutionary War. Fort Boonesborough was the site of several violent clashes between Kentucky settlers and Native Americans allied with the British, including the Great Siege of 1778. 

After the revolution, the frontier continued to expand westward, and many of Fort Boonesborough’s residents settled elsewhere. By th e 1820s, it was largely abandoned, and in 1963 the fort was reconstructed, and the site opened as a Kentucky State Park.

For the 13th episode of the Frontier we have decided to step up and present our own interpretation of what the series is. The Frontier is a series that means a lot to us, it's something that we have talked about wanting to do for a long time and have been very careful in how we want to curate it. From the music, to the artwork, and to the artists we've invited on, every decision has been carefully thought about. 

So with that being said we are proud to present our own mix, coming in at just over 2 hours. We feel this is a good representation of our sound and how we like to develop and build things up over the course of a few hours. 

As with all our Frontier mixes we have not included the tracklist. Feel free to comment below and we will let you know what is being played.

The Frontier 013 - Quadrant Soundscape

Challenge: make a song for the theme of "Shovel and Pick".

Continuing on with the NES soundchip project and trying to work within those limited constraints. This one uses a swing tempo and has a routine alternate percussion on the noise channel that's designed to emulate the shovel and pickaxe actions. Went for a bit of a western ranch type feel with a sort of blues form.

Artist: Hidden Sequence [Mosaic / Lempuyang / Alt Dub / Moon Garden / Silent Season]

Our 12th journey takes until into the joint minds of Paul Simmons and Stefano Ugliano (6884) aka… Hidden Sequence. The Duo have been playing and producing together since they met in 2020. Individually they both have their own unique sound and skill sets. Paul, born and raised in London, has been DJ’ing across the world for over two decades while Stefano , is an Italian born self confessed studio dweller and sound sculptor. As is often the case with duos of this nature, what they bring to the table is even greater than the individual parts. Their music has been a breath of fresh air within the Dub Techno community since their arrival on the scene.   

Production wise they have had a string over incredible releases over the last few years with music coming 200 Records, Mosaic, Lempuyang, Alt Dub, Ausblick, Moon Garden and OHM Series. Quite the resume for this relatively new collaboration. Having had some great conversations with the guys, we are extremely excited to hear what they have planned and forthcoming over the next weeks and months.   

For their contribution to the Frontier series they have turned in an incredible hour of music. We float through some beautiful ambient cuts, some bass wobbling, head nodding Dub, Roots & Reggae, and onward into the world for 4/4 dub techno. They really went to town on this mix and we are honoured that they have packed in lots of unreleased material.   

We would like to thank Hidden Sequence for this mix, we are honoured to be able to host such a talented pair. Keep an eye out for everything they have coming up as it’s not to be slept on.

The 14th destination on our journey across the musical galaxy takes us to the planet under the control of Anton Lanski. Hailing from Izhevsk, Russia, Anton is an artist we’ve been huge fans of for many years. An Artist that has featured on our shows and mixes for almost as long as we’ve been doing them. He is truly an artist with a unique sound that has been carved out over many years at the top of the game. His productions are deep, Dubby and atmospheric.   

With such a wealth of musical talent at his fingertips, Anton is  able to showcase is talents across multiple fields. Under his Gespleu alias he has releases slow-mo/chill/house records. He is also part of an electonic-pop/ambient band  called Cetranger.

Founded in 1780, what would become Transylvania University was established over a decade before Kentucky even became a state. In 1818, Horace Holley—a Yale-educated minister from Connecticut—took over as president of the fledgling institution. Holley attempted to transform the institution, but ran into a host of difficulties. Join us today for a discussion with a former research fellow, who has written a book exploring Holley’s life and the tumultuous time that he spent at Transylvania.

Dr. James P. Cousins is the President of Kentucky Wesleyan College. He holds a PhD from the University of Kentucky and has published widely on the history of education. He co-authored, Collaboration and the Future of Education: Preserving the Right to Think and Teach Historically. A former research fellow at the Kentucky Historical Society, Dr. Cousins will talk to us today about his book “Horace Holley: Transylvania University and the Making of Liberal Education in the Early American Republic,” which he published with the University Press of Kentucky.
