Dr. Abhilasha Sahay, Economist at the Gender Group, World Bank, shares key insights from her research, Conditional Cash Transfers and Violence Against Women – Does the Type of Violence Matter?

This study examines the impact of a conditional cash transfer (CCT) program in the Philippines on various forms of violence against women (VAW). Using a regression discontinuity design, it analyses effects on intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic violence (excluding IPV), and violence outside the home. While no significant impact is found on IPV or external violence, the study reports a decline in emotional domestic violence. Evidence suggests this may be driven by improved household wellbeing, women's empowerment, bargaining power, and social capital. The findings highlight CCT programs' potential to reduce VAW beyond IPV, while also emphasizing the role of program design and context.

At the World Bank, Dr. Sahay has led multiple projects aimed at enhancing women's economic participation. She has also served as the Regional Liaison for the Africa region. Prior to her current role, Dr. Sahay worked at the Africa Gender Innovation Lab and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Her primary research areas include Applied Microeconomics and Development Economics, with secondary interests in Gender Economics, Economics of Crime, and Family Economics.

Dr. Abhilasha Sahay earned her PhD in Economics from the George Washington University and Masters from London School of Economics and Political Science.

Using the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence as a guiding document, listeners can interact with and interrogate the lack of systemic change and justice towards women, children and queer individuals experiencing sexual violence and oppression. 

Here, within, is a call to mobilise for impact. A call for our government to address interconnected social issues that hinder the development of children. EP 4 The Politics of You and Me: Justice for Cwecwe

In this episode, Justice For All, Host Mpho Nyamathe shed light on the recent developments of the tragic case Cwecwe, a then 7-year-old girl who was allegedly raped under the care of Bergview College, Matatiele. By so doing, the host encourages listeners to continue speaking up on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. This is the only way to guarantee systemic change! 

Moreover, this episode speaks on the Omotoso case, whereby Timothy Omotoso and his co-accused were acquitted to all 32 charges related to sexual assault, racketeering, and human trafficking. Highlighting some of the issues of the cases, the episode calls into question the validity of the verdict and the interrogates the trend of sexual violence in the church. This episode also applauds the Minister of Constitutional Development invoking Section 33(2)(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act and demanding a report from the National Direction of PP and invoking Section 33(2)(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act. 

In closing, the episode calls upon South Africans to stand up in solidarity for women, children, and queer individuals who susceptible to sexual violence and oppression. EP 5 The Politics of You and Me: Justice For All

In this episode, Marching Against Oppression, Host Mpho Nyamathe takes her listeners and online community through the disturbing trend of sexual violence in the church, while explaining the key elements on her op-ed on the case, now published under Mail and Guardian.

As a thought leader and policymaker, Mpho Nyamathe calls for amendments to the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which place special attention to women, children and young adolescents who are subject to various forms of toxic masculinity and sexual violence.

Furthermore, this episode served as an overview of the Demonstration led by Women For Change. In her capacity as a Marshal, Mpho Nyamathe interviewed the Spokeperson for Women For Change, Miss Grand International and the author of an childrens book titled Hero Kimberley. 

In the spirits of having bold conversations with real solutions, Mpho encourages her listeners and online community to keep holding our leaders to account.

In this episode, An Intersectional Lens to Gender Inequality and GBVF, host Mpho Nyamathe reflects on the sociological theory of Intersectionality to dissect gender inequality and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. 

Guided by the sociological works of Dr. Patricia Hill Collins, Mpho Nyamathe takes a closer look at the intersecting inequalities experienced by Gogo Phetsana, an elderly woman who was waiting for housing, running water and a flushing toilet under the RDP Programme. From the apartheid era, she died without ever having access to these services, thereby living through systemic inequalities. 

The episode encourages listeners to rethink social inequalities so that policies are reflective of people living in South Africa.
