On the Jan. 20th edition of the Source, we welcome Maeve Jones, the executive director of the Poe Museum, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a big three-day Birthday Bash that will include appearances at the Carpenter Theatre by noted horror and sci-fi authors RL Stine and Nnedi Okorafor, paying tribute the man himself, Edgar Allan Poe. We also present some hot button issues being debated and protested at the Virginia General Assembly this session. We welcome Rae Ann Pickett, communications director of the Virginia League For Planned Parenthood (pictured here with son Henry and PP's Digital Communications associate, Autumn Green). She talks about the Jan. 26 lobbying day slated to challenge the dozens of anti-abortion bills being filed by legislators this session. We also speak with Katina Harris, President of the Richmond Education Association, and Boaz Young El of the VIrginia Education Association, about the crucial issues facing public K-12 students this year, and about the Fund our Schools rally that happened outside the capital on MLK Day. Her organization helped to spur on the state's new redistricting maps, and she tells Don Harrison how redistricting has already affected this November's General Assembly races, and also why UpVote is now advocating for ranked choice voting in Virginia. THEN Dina Weinstein focuses on the history of the first Native American school in America, the Brafferton Indian School. It was established in 1697 to provide christian education to native Americans in Virginia.
