[About SemiHumanSize]

Around 2005, about 18 years ago, there was a Japanese indie band called SemiHumanSize.
The band consisted of four men: Vo&Gt (Koji), Gt (Daigo), Ba (Tokuho), and Dr (Ryusuke).

Koji, Daigo, and Tokuho started playing music together in junior high and high school, and later Ryusuke, who was Tokuho's junior in college, joined as a drummer.
Influenced by Britpop such as Oasis and Blur, alternative such as Nirvana, and post-rock such as Mogwai and Sigur Rós, the band performed mainly at live houses in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo.

After releasing "Neo Primal Disco Utopia," a 9-song soundtrack that they recorded themselves, they began to play more live shows and hold events, and finally released a new EP with 3 songs from an independent label.
On May 21, they held a one-man live release event at Shimokitazawa 251, and the live show was a great success.

However, just two weeks later, on 6/4, Koji passed away suddenly.

The day before, at the live at Omiya Hearts, Koji's guitar stopped playing and there was some equipment trouble, but the group left Omiya with a positive talk since a small tour to the Kansai area was already scheduled. The next day, we received the news of his death.
We received the news of his death in the evening of the next day, but I think it happened a few hours after we parted because we had launched the tour until late at Omiya.

Many people gathered at the funeral and spent the night with him.
I still vividly remember that I was shocked beyond words by the sudden sad news.
In a sense, we were more than family.

He was 27 years old. He was the vocalist of an unknown band, but he was a member of the "27 Club.
Why it was so is a matter of individual interpretation, and even now I don't know the truth.
During the MC of the one-man show on May 21, he said, "Please enjoy the last one-man show."  The audience laughed.
It was a slip of the tongue, but I wonder what the larger implications were.
Then, during the encore song "away", he cried and couldn't sing.
Now that I think about it, those of us who had worked with him in the past could understand why he was so moved.

A month later, the band members perform a memorial concert in the form of a film gig and one song that can barely be performed by the three of them.
He was a sociable, outgoing, easygoing person with a carefree side, and I think he was loved by everyone. The Shimokitazawa Club Que was packed to capacity to see him one last time.
On stage, the three of us declared that we would carry on his will and continue the band.

I think we had no other choice at that time.
We felt that we needed to have a strong will when we saw people in sorrow as well as ourselves.
Perhaps we clung to the will to overcome and carry on.

The strong will we felt at that time gradually faded away over the long months.
Because we are human beings. It is not that we have forgotten, but the freshness of that time is gone, and our will is left behind unclaimed.

We had been exploring new expressions by introducing synths and wind instruments beyond the framework of a guitar rock band, and we welcomed a new female member, Saki, as Vo&Key, and changed into a band with a male Vo&Gt, female Vo&Key, Ba, and Dr. The drums are triggered by Pad and Kick, and the bass guitar is triggered by Pad and Kick.
Drums introduced triggers on Pad and Kick, and synchronized with the PC upper things while listening to the clicks. Keyboard sings while playing strings and piano phrases. Bass phrases with groove. The theme was to do club sounds with a live band.
The band continued for a few years, but gradually the members had to make decisions about their future, and they started to move on with their lives, and the band spontaneously disappeared.

In 2023, as generative AI continued to develop at a rapid pace, I came across voice AI, having been exposed to text generation AI and image generation AI.

While watching a demo video of the program on Github, I was convinced that I could revive his singing voice from the Vo recording tracks that I had saved up until then.
After 24 hours of training 1.4 GB of voice tracks, I had completed his voice AI model.

When he heard Koji's song generated from the completed AI model, he was astonished. He was astonished to hear Koji's song generated from the AI model, and he could even feel the atmosphere of the time.

The two of us went into the studio to record the vocals. They set up a microphone and recorder, and pressed the Rec button next to each other. We would edit and mix the material we brought back and listen to it dozens or hundreds of times.
I was able to feel the atmosphere of the studio room, the tone of his voice, the condition of his throat, his emotions, and other background things besides singing, on the vocal-only track without orchestra.
The singing voice produced by AI seemed to reproduce such atmosphere.

The way he sings, the way his voice sounds, the way his voice is not clear, the way his words are coming out of his nose, his unique way of crooning, etc., are just like his voice.
I felt as if I had recorded with Koji for the first time in a long time, which scared me a little.

And for some reason, I felt a sense of urgency that I often felt in those days, a feeling of not being able to stand still.
It was a kind of impatience and initial impulse that is characteristic of young people. At the time, these feelings were one of the motivations for me to do music.

A sense of being driven. I had thought that the more one accumulates experience in life, the more insensitive it becomes, but I had never expected that something generated by an AI could evoke such a raw sensation.

Now that we had created his AI model, we as members of the group had a job to do.
We had songs that we had played live but had not made into sound recordings, unreleased songs, and remakes of sound recordings that were not in good condition.


I am hesitant about having an AI learn the voice of the deceased and publish it to the world.
However, as time goes by and memories of the deceased become vague, I feel that I do not want to forget him, that I want to write down his life in some form, and that I should materialize the proof of his life.

The generative AI community has been inundated with AI gravure idols and AI influencers on social media in recent years. Some of them are learning and using images that they own the rights to as their artifacts. Similarly, the voice of vocaloids and voice actors are being learned and sold on BOOTH without permission.
I am sure there will be many ways to use AI since it is still in its infancy, but I am going to try to use it in my own way.


I have an unresolved problem in one corner of my mind.
I also have a feeling that the will that I have not been able to retrieve at that time is stuck somewhere.

In many ways, it feels like a reunion after 18 years.
It is a reunion with Koji, a reunion with myself, and a reunion with that time.
