Between the Lines explores the intersection of local and national issues. This episode discusses Newburyport's gentrification -- its positives and negatives, and what it means for the city's culture. We also discuss cultural evolution on a national scale, and why despite objectively positive change, people always seem to long for the past.

James Charles Roy is an author and historian with 8 books to his credit, and a new one coming out this fall. He's also written articles in both academic and popular journals. Some viewers might remember him for his biweekly newsletter, The Newburyport Liberator, that he launched mainly to annoy the then mayor, which he succeeded in doing. He has been deeply involved in the community: he sat on the board of the Newburyport Library renovation committee; spent thirty frustrating years as chair of the mayor's Parking and Traffic Committee, whose triumphant finale was the creation of the downtown parking garage, the whole point of which was to remove cars from the waterfront. Today's wonderful park by the river is the direct result of that effort. And he co-chaired the committee that created Newburyport's only Local Historic District.

John Giordano is a visual artist, writer, and coach. He started Ramp Coaching in 206, while he was a professor at Merrimack College. He has started numerous community-based educational access programs in Philadelphia and Boston focused on college access for first generation college students. He has served as board president of Theater in the Open, and has volunteered for many arts education organizations, as well as local political campaigns. John is the co-founder of Indivisible, a Newburyport area group focused on strengthening democracy. He is currently working on an initiative to create access to coaching for a wide array of people.

Takes its title from actual 2024-2025 housing justice slogans. Opens with the April 2025 Housing NOW! protests where activists wrapped city halls in red tape. National Coalition for the Homeless Verses expose private equity landlords: Greystar buying 8,500 apartments and jacking up rent 36% while cutting security and maintenance; ProPublica Blackstone raising rents 31.5% in Phoenix; Private Equity Stakeholder Project Cleveland where private equity purchases jumped from 7.2% to 21.1%. Lincoln Institute of Land Policy Contrasts Spain's hundreds of thousands marching for housing rights Al Jazeera with America's reality where the top 10% own 67% of wealth while the bottom 50% own 2.5%.
Chorus: "Housing over handcuffs, homes over greed / It's a human right, not a luxury / From DC to Nashville, San Francisco Bay / They're pricing us out, but we're here to stay." References the Poor People's Campaign organizing 140 million poor and low-income people. Poor People's Campaign Bridge is spoken-word from a tenant forced out: "I felt like I was forced out the door." ProPublica Ends with chant: "Whose city? OUR city!"

i am an electronic music/noise maker, musicologist, and ex-dj. unless it's plunderphonics pieces or remixes/mashups the music is 100% me outside of samples from shows and movies or other media sources, occasionally Shelley or Loren will lend their vocals to my tracks. 

my work with Shelley & Loren is sometimes a hybrid of original music and AI, and not just auto-generated slop, we work a lot on the pieces regardless of whether AI was used or not. they are talented musicians in their own right, and sometimes the end results are magnificent, but we're always experimenting, and the results are sometimes rough... and we do love damaged sounding recordings in any format on top of it all.
