This is a video recording of the 2020 Gesture paper "Context, not sequence order, affects the meaning of bonobo (Pan paniscus) gestures" by Kirsty Graham, Takeshi Furuichi, and Richard Byrne. We find that although some bonobo gestures appear to have multiple meanings, they seem to have specific meanings in specific contexts.

Gesture started his musical journey in 2021, with his 1st release ‘skynet’ on Scuffed Presents 007, garnering support from Sherelle, Plastician, Surgeon and Mixtress leading to subsequent releases on Torre, Scuffed and 83 in 2023. 

Gesture’s track Syntax Acid has found a home on Brick Sweats ‘4TPP’ VA LP. It’s a fusion of bubbly acid and breaks mixed with a warp factor in the ever ascending vocal. 

The Full VA is dropping on the 29th of July, available on all major platforms.

London-based producer Gesture delivers a dynamic display of mutated breaks and beat wizardry on "Check Sum" the 12th release from Redstone Press. Pseudopolis rounds off the four-track EP with an acid-drenched, free-party reminiscing remix.

On "Check Sum", Gesture channels weighty, distorted bass hits, wobbly breakbeats, and tense, hazy pads into a dark sonic offering. Wonky, textured atmospherics drift in, while ghostly Hip Hop and R&B vocal fragments weave in and out. "Grizzlin" introduces echoing dub vocals, skeletal breaks, and blurry organs before diving into a melting pot of spiraling amens, pummeling subs, and aquatic percussive elements. On "PH0L8" Gesture maintains the relentless breakbeat template, adding reverb-soaked 303s, mind-altering breakdowns, and plunging bass drops to create a rich, hypnotic soundscape. Label boss Pseudopolis reinterprets "PH0L8" into acid-techno territory, stripping back the original and adding 4/4 heft and shimmering, ethereal pads. Hold tight for the Reece bass switch-up halfway through.

Redstone Press hold no punches with the release of a new EP from London based producer Gesture. This one packs a punch with this track being our pick of the lot. A heavy hitting bass track with glitchy vocals and sharp chops and changes.

Gestures: every known language has them, and there's a growing body of research on how they fit into communication. But academic literature can be hard to dig into on your own. So Lauren has spent the past 5 years diving into the gesture literature and boiling it down into a tight 147 page book.  

In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about Lauren's new book, Gesture: A Slim Guide from Oxford University Press. Is it a general audience book? An academic book? A bit of both. (Please enjoy our highlights version in this episode, a slim guide to the Slim Guide, if you will.) We talk about the wacky hijinks gesture researchers have gotten up to with the aim of preventing people from gesturing without tipping them off that the study is about gesture, including a tricked-out "coloured garden relax chair" that makes people "um" more, as well as crosslinguistic gestural connections between signed and spoken languages, and how Gretchen's gestures in English have been changing after a year of ASL classes. Plus, a few behind-the-scenes moments: Lauren putting a line drawing of her very first gesture study on the cover, and how the emoji connection from Because Internet made its way into Gesture (and also into the emoji on your phone right now).
