Enkidu is a central figure in The Epic of Gilgamesh, crafted by the gods from clay to be a counterpart to the powerful but arrogant King Gilgamesh. Representing the raw, untamed essence of nature, Enkidu begins his life as a wild being, roaming freely among animals in harmony with the natural world. However, his life changes when he encounters Shamhat, a temple prostitute sent to civilize him. Through her, he gains human knowledge and loses his connection to the wild, ultimately joining society and forging a deep bond with Gilgamesh. Together, they embark on heroic adventures, battling monsters like Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven. Enkidu serves as both a loyal friend and a moral compass for Gilgamesh, helping the king grow as a leader. His death, a punishment by the gods for their defiance, becomes a transformative moment in the story, driving Gilgamesh to confront his own mortality and seek eternal life.
