AfricaNow! December 4, 2024 COP29—Climate Justice Shortchanged

Topic and Guest: Today AfricaNow! is following up from our show of three weeks ago during first days of the UN Climate Change Conference began in Baku, Azerbaijan.  The conference was scheduled from November 11 until November 22, 2024, and it was the 29th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the 1992 UN climate agreement (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC]). The agreement was put into force in 1994—30 years ago this year.  

COP29 conference ended a day later than scheduled.  At end the Global North pledged to provide $300billion to the Global South in assisting it to move to a low carbon economy and adapt its infrastructure to handle the impacts of extreme weather.  The Global South had demanded at least $1 trillion.  Thus, members of the Global South walked out of the negotiation rooms.   Representatives from the Global South were quoted in the Guardian newspaper saying: “[We are] outraged and deeply hurt by the outcome of COP29. Once again, the countries most responsible for the climate crisis have failed us. This is not just a failure. Yesterday I had a conversation with Dakar-based activist Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan, Head of Building Power Department at the Climate Action Network (CAN) International.   Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan who attended the climate conference in Baku.  The conversation dissects the outcomes of COP29: the continuous unmet pledges by the Global North (countries heavily responsible for the climate change); unmet demands of climate justice for countries most impacted by climate change; fossil fuel industry’s negative impact; next steps and more.

In this episode of the FSR Policy Briefcase (Season 2, Episode 7), hosts Leonardo Meeus and James Kneebone speak with Mira Tiwari from the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies about how the EU’s evolving approach to environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies is impacting value chains in the Global South.

Mira breaks down what “Global North” and “Global South” really mean in today’s context, and why the Global South’s agency is often undervalued in international ESG decision-making. Together, the group explores:

- How representation in ESG bodies can affect outcomes

- Why Global South participation in the policymaking process is crucial for successful implementation

- The potential tensions between commercial interests and ESG priorities

- What the EU’s recent regulatory changes signal for global cooperation

Climate Stories Project (CSP) is an educational and artistic forum for sharing personal stories about the effects of climate change on our lives and communities. CSP focuses on personal oral histories, which bring an immediacy to the sometimes abstract nature of climate change communication. Some of us may recount dramatic events such as floods and wildfires, or we may address our observations of changes in seasonal patterns and our fears for the future of our families and communities. We may discuss how climate change is forcing our communities to adapt to extreme weather and sea level rise. Or we may speak about how we are getting involved in the movement to fight the fossil fuel industry through community organizing or nonviolent protest.There is no "right" way to talk about climate change, as it is a vast topic that is increasingly touching every corner of our lives. CSP also facilitates educational workshops where students learn to speak about their own responses to climate change and interview guest speakers about theirs. In addition, some climate stories are featured in music and soundscape projects that allow audiences to witness the effects of climate change in a novel way.
