In Luke 10 we read the story of the Good Samaritan. In this account, we can see that it was through compassion and mercy that the Samaritan helped a stranger who was in need of help. Despite being noticed by others, he had been overlooked and avoided.

In this instance, the Samaritan was not looking for someone to help, but rather came across the situation in his everyday life. So too can our compassion and mercy be extended to others.

It’s not always in our official roles or ministries that we do the work of God, but in our mundane, everyday tasks of life. When Jesus is teaching this parable, it is a command for us all to ​“Go and do likewise”.

2,000 years after Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan, the phrase "Good Samaritan" has come to mean something very different than the first telling. Whereas we hear "a person who goes out of their way to do a good deed," Jesus's original listeners heard "my enemy shocking me by meeting my need." Which means that the parable's primarily call is not primarily to "do good deeds" but rather to recognize that the person we are most inclined to suspect and despise is a person we not only need to love... they are also the person we need.

What does it mean to find our identity in Christ?  How exactly does a person do that?  Jesus explains just how this is possible as he converses with a lawyer who was trying to trip him up.  His response to the lawyer's questions is to share the story of the Good Samaritan.  This explains what it looks like in the real world, when a person has rooted their personal identity in Christ--it impacts how they live every day.

A Good Samaritan - Hymn

The Parable of the Good Samaritan is not a Gospel story. It is not a story on how to be saved. It is a Law story. It confronts us with our own self-righteousness, beats us up, and leaves us in a ditch very much in need of a Savior. It is not about what we do; it is about what Christ has done. Sermon: Who Is My Neighbor 7-13-25

In response to the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan—a story that has challenged hearts for centuries. But His response is not merely a lesson in compassion. It’s a call to action: “Go and do likewise.”

Through this parable, Jesus redefines what it means to be a neighbor. It’s not about proximity or familiarity, but about mercy. The Samaritan—an outsider in the eyes of many—becomes the true neighbor because he acted in love, even when it cost him something. Jesus invites us into the same kind of faith-based initiative: caring for others with compassion, even when it’s inconvenient.

At St. James, we see the Good Samaritan story lived out in many small but powerful ways. Wherever mercy is extended and burdens are shared, the love of Christ is made visible. Jesus still speaks those words to us today: “You go, and do likewise.”

Eljay Trekker is the host of “Who's My Neighbor?" a new podcast where the goal is finding out who our neighbors are. What we aim to do is to inspire people by sharing everyone's story, their passion, their hopes and dreams, their aspirations, and even some of their hardships. Our motivation is being part of the change, and that change starts with you!
A little bit about the host: Eljay, is a Christian who served in the National Guard, the US Marine Corp, and was also a former Custom Protection Officer. Now living in Utah, Eljay, is an avid hiker, who had only since started hiking only a few short years ago, hiking the beautiful trails of southern Utah.
