Happy Autumn and welcome back to our recurring mix series 'Styles'; a sonic journey aimed at showcasing unique styles and subgenres nestled amongst the broad landscape of electronic dance music. For this, our ninth episode, we are excited to share with you a fresh new mix from GRA co-founder and resident DJ, TwoThrows, as he explores a burgeoning new subgenre, Bassline Dubstep.

"Bassline Dubstep is a style that draws heavy inspiration from the old school and fuses it with copious aspects of more contemporary electronic dance genres. This style, often hovering around 140 bpm, is typically characterized by its utilization of slower halftime dubstep drum patterns along with faster feeling double-time hi hat and percussion rhythms, producing its distinguishing sound. With an emphasis on leading basslines and heavy vocal sample usage, Bassline Dubstep will often draw inspiration from adjacent styles such as 2-Step, Grime and Drill just to name a few. The genre has made waves in the mid 2020s as producers such as Hamdi, Sammy Virji and Cesco among others have honed in on the swingy, swanky vibes that this style conjures up."

Hello once again! Welcome back to our synodically recurring mix series 'Styles'; a sonic journey aimed at showcasing unique styles and subgenres nestled amongst the broad landscape of electronic dance music. As we cruise into the latter part of the year, we have arrived at episode number ten in our mix series. For this 33 minute mix, GRA.audio resident selector and Cincinnati native, Jetlag, digs into the high energy and fast paced genre known as UK Garage, displaying the depth and variety that this style has to offer.

"UK garage, or UKG, is an umbrella term for an array of electronic dance music (EDM) and urban music styles that emerged from the United Kingdom’s club scene in the 1990s. The garage house music scene originating in New York in the late ’90s gave rise to several British variants, including speed garage and 2-step, which were all eventually labeled as UK garage for the sake of clarity. The unifying factors in all of these forms were syncopated basslines and percussion—either two kick beats to a bar, or “2-step,” or the 4/4 pattern of house music at a tempo usually around 130 BPM. After producing hits by such artists as So Solid Crew, the Streets, and Craig David, UK garage was, like many forms of electronic music, usurped by newer styles, many of which it had helped create, such as dubstep, grime, and UK funky. However, the style enjoyed a semi-comeback in the 2010s, thanks to new music by many of its originators and new DJs and performers alike."
