Stephen L. Stern is the president of Storyboard Graphic Novels. Steve is best known as the creator/writer of the indie comic-book Zen Intergalactic Ninja that has sold over three million comics and graphic novels and been licensed for video games, action figures and numerous other products. He is also the creator of Shygirl and Frickin' Butt-Kickin' Zombie Ants, and the author of Beowulf: The Graphic Novel and the A Christmas Carol Graphic Novel, both published by the UK’s Markosia. His other works include Alien Hero, a collection of novellas and stories about Zen, and the upcoming Majestic Comics Graphic Novel. Stern is a native of New York and former advertising agency president with clients including Johnson & Johnson, Rosenthal China and The Singer Company. He lives in Los Angeles, where he launched Storyboard Graphic Novels in 2011, working with several of his longtime friends and associates—who just happen to be some of the highest-profile artists and writers in the industry today.

Today’s book is weighty. We read "Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir" by Tessa Hulls. This book follows the lives of Tessa’s grandmother, mother, and herself through some of the most difficult periods of Chinese history in the first half of the twentieth century, as well as the mental illness and generational trauma that has bound them together ever since. It’s not all doom and gloom as we also talk about visual metaphors and page composition, but come prepared.

My original score for Josh Simmons’s 2007 graphic novel “House”. 

I came across this graphic novel in Skylight Books in Los Feliz, Los Angeles last summer. I was immediately taken by the atmosphere, the lack of dialogue, the visual style and the story itself. I reached out to Josh over email and pitched the idea of me composing music to accompany his graphic novel and he accepted it. Over the course of a year I developed the sound world of the score, using a mixture of synthesizers, found object sounds and natural soundscapes. The result is an 11.5 minute tour de force that follows the narrative arc of the graphic novel.  

So, if you own the physical graphic novel, crack it open, press play, and start to read.
