Incredible dopeness from Belgian producer Gratts, dropping four tracks of banging house music on Klub Romance. Donning a new guise as Trackhead T, Gratts focuses on the spectral and esoteric side of house on this deep club track, "Empyrean Crossing," premiering here for 5 Mag.

"Keeping things raw and stripped back, the Belgian challenged himself in the studio to use about 12 channels max per track. The result is Klub Romance, a little nod to his old stomping ground Berlin: 4 flavours of deep club trax with influences ranging from early Felix Da Housecat to Boo Williams or even Schatrax."

I recently stumbled upon this 17 year old dj-set on an old HD and thought I'd share it here as I thought it still sounded fresh and genuine.
Recorded live at Belgium's infamous Decadance club in Ghent on March 24th 2007, here's nearly two hours of various shades of bumpin' house music. Vinyl only - this is what I sounded like in those days, and some of these records I still hold dear and play today.

Decadence was a very special place. The club opened at 10pm Saturday night and wouldn't close until Sunday afternoon. We spent countless beautiful nights and extended mornings there, blissfully dancing together with friends and strangers.

They'd have lots of amazing international guests week after week, from the US (Derrick Carter, Lance Desardi), UK (Inland Knights) and more, but also had lots of incredible resident djs. My home town is Leuven, a 1 hour train ride from Ghent, and we would regularly make the trek. The house and techno scene in those days was strong all over Flanders: Leuven, Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and even most smaller towns had great club nights happening. (And then I'm not even talking about our trips to Wallonia, but that's a whole different story.)

The water was not yet warm and the tourists were yet to arrive. As they sat watching from the shore, they took in the peace and quiet of the beach before the summer months sucked them in. Soon it would be too busy to move, there would be no room to swim and all that would be heard was the sound of whoops and screams as revellers delighted in the glow and warmth of an island which wasn’t really theirs.

She walked down the pier towards the water, hoping that the cold might shock her free from the guilt and dread of another long hot summer in another mans paradise.

She entered the ocean, only to become submerged by what lay below.

Gratts enlists contributions from Mr Beale on a new 7″ release which has us all seeking a warmer climate, Delicate leftfield house music at its very best, the sort which will sound great by the water or in the club.

Australian artist Gratts wrote 'Sun Circles' as an empowerment anthem for his two sons and it dropped to plenty of acclaim last year. In its wake, Gratts DJed with Adelaide's multi-talented Alexander Flood on percussion and after some conversations he was enlisted to bring his jazz background to a remix of the original. He did so live as part of a quintet and the result is a super summery, airy rework with soulful vocals that linger long in the air. Michigan-based techno and ambient maestro John Beltran appears on the flip to bring a classy Balearic remix that will have you dreaming of longer, warmer nights and plenty of sun-kissed dancing fun

The sun was setting in the distance, little could be seen but for the headlights from cars parked upon the beach. They illuminated the darkness with their beams which shone far outward over the water and into the great beyond.

Someone had lit a small bonfire down upon the sand. Shadows were gathered all around the flames, dancing and chatting as the sun vanished slowly beyond the abyss.

They would be here all night long, waiting until it might return once more and cast the world ablaze. The air was warm and thick as the last of the summer began to fade away.

Belgian-born producer Gratts and pioneering Chicago vocalist Robert Owens first collaborated on 'Brighter Future' back in 2021 after meeting in the streets of Kreuzberg years before. The pair now join forces again for follow up 'Today', a powerful and emotive, 90s inspired deep house cut with layered backings and Owens' lilting affirmations soaring above. The extended club version takes you straight to house music's ecstatic heydays, while the twelve also includes an acapella tool for those singalong moments. On the flip, Mark Hand's slower, soulful rendition takes things into sideroom territory. Finally, 'Mount Olympus', home to the Greek deities, fuses a rattling drum machine, arpeggiated synth lines and a potent analogue bassline - with added bonus beats to bang the box and get weird!
