I thought I'd share this track with you having just discovered the tragic news that Nick is no longer with us. RIP Nick I never said thanks for putting us on the guest list at The Paradsio, Amsterdam in 2012 for your Gravenhurst show at London Rocks. 

Nick and I spoke about four weeks ago about these lost Assembly Communications tracks from 1996. I sent Nick the wav files as he wanted to enjoy his first band again, we never did establish what he intended to do with them. I'm sure Nick wouldn't mind me sharing one of them with you now in celebration of a true talent. Nick Bristol salutes you sir.

What does the future of peace and quiet look like? Is it possible for someone to find serenity in a world where population mushrooms and buildings continuously jockey for the best possible view? With Kael Smith’s (Mombi, Khale) Mute Forest this dichotomy is at the epicenter of his 'Infinity Pools EP' due April 7th via Lost Tribe Sound.

To coincide with visuals courtesy of Gregory Euclide (Bon Iver, Erased Tapes), Smith’s debut EP fuses acoustic sounds, mangled electronics and provocative lyrics across four meditative yet mesmerizing tracks.

Serving as a companion piece to his expansive and sonorous LP, 'Deforestation', due later this year, Smith’s 'Infinity Pools EP' was actually written as a reaction to that material but will be released first.“ 'Deforestation' will in a sense be a prequel to the EP,” explains Smith. “And for listeners who follow along, should provide an interesting reverse narrative,” he concludes.

“Crypt,” the EP’s opener, contains oscillating vinyl-sampled rhythms, chiming electric guitar and gently struck nylon guitar. Following that is the sparce and haunting “Volcanoes Flowing,” which traces a melancholy beat and slow, lovely piano crescendos to its heartbreaking conclusion.

Darker in tone, title track "Infinity Pools" has a commanding presence using ominous electronics and damaged samples of Le Creuset pots being struck. Heavily processed and featuring vocals from Smith’s longtime girlfriend Kelly O’Brien, the track unfurls into a hypnotic groove over the chilling words “You’ll feel like an ember trilling/out in space.”

Washing over the listener to conclude the EP, “Eat the Skin” originally started as an A Winged Victory for the Sullen remix of a song off of their recent LP, 'Atomos'. As the track progressed though, all of the layers performed by AWVFTS were eventually stripped leaving only acoustic guitar and Smith’s voice. “I like to pretend we wrote that song together, hopefully someday they will hear it” desires Smith. He uses the big, cavernous sound of acoustic guitar as base for unhurried, dulcet vocals and airy electronics. “I’ve always loved the big, acoustic sound of Seafood’s “Desert Stretched Before the Sun”“ explains Smith. “I really tried to emulate that deep resonate tone where the acoustic sounds like a tidal wave.”

I first discovered Gravenhurst back in 2004 while exhausting the last of my pizza-serving paycheck at my local record store, Stinkweeds in Tempe, AZ. As I was thumbing through new releases, eerie, atmospheric-folk began to play over the store’s sound system. When Nick’s voice emerged from the fog, I was hooked. I purchased Flashlight Seasons that day and immediately felt as if I was let in on a secret. I listened to that album incessantly. To make extra money during this time I began to DJ weddings, mitzvahs and private parties.  The nights were long and the playlists were pre-chosen by the clients. When I climbed into my ’86 Honda Civic (nicknamed “the roller skate”) at the end of the night all I wanted to do was to cleanse my ears with Nick’s beautiful, intimate songs. His music was my companion; something I could count on when I was lonely. Although I never got a chance to see Nick perform or meet him in person, I felt like through his songs I knew him intimately.

Nick passed away a year ago today. At the time I coped with the tragic news by recording one of my favorite songs of his, “The Diver”. And while my version could never hold a light to the original, I recorded it with great sincerity and sorrow. I learned later that Nick had suffered from the seizure-causing disorder epilepsy, a disorder my mother also suffers from. That’s why I’m releasing the cover as a pay-what-you-want digital download via Bandcamp with 100% of the proceeds going to the http://www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/, the leading provider of epilepsy services in the UK though research, awareness campaigns, info. resources and expert care. Please consider donating a minimum of $1 for the song and help give people with this often debilitating disorder your support.

Kael Smith's new album, 'Riderstorm.' You may know Smith under his moniker, Mute Forest. Over a year ago, Smith began recording a new album at the well-respected studio Russian Recording in Indiana. It was quite the endeavor, involving a ton of help financially, emotionally, and talent-wise to bring 'Riderstorm' to fruition.

Thankfully, Smith asked us to help with the release of this very personal album, and preparing it for vinyl, CD and digital.  Many of you may not know, but tragedy befell Smith (aka Mombi) in 2017 when his father died from alcohol abuse. Smith mentions, “There was a very long stretch after my dad died that I didn’t play music, my love for it was gone. This has been the most difficult record of my life to make... or at least to get started." 

Around the time we listened to the demo recordings for 'Riderstorm' here at LTS headquarters the news of Mark Hollis' passing had just arrived. Sadden by this, we’d been doing a deep dive into some of the early post-rock groups that made us fall in love with Hollis’ music, like Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis. Pressing play on Smith’s new album as cliché as this might sound, it felt right at home with quietly triumphant nature of these early pioneers.  We know now from talking with Smith that this was unintentional, but there is a strong vibe within ‘Riderstorm’ that recalls this era. It rides between the patient strumming and the more spontaneous bombastic movements, paired with Smith’s bare-all vocals and his keen sense to let the music breath through long instrumental passages.

'Riderstorm' (out April 3rd, 2020) is available to pre-order in two physical formats and digitally. The CD arrives in a Japanese-style gatefold jacket featuring full color artwork by Berlin-based visual artist, Gundula Blumi. The album was also pressed to 150gm vinyl using the lacquer cut method by the high quality plant Gottagroove in Ohio, USA. The vinyl comes housed in a beautifully textured, 350g reverse print jacket, with an interior anti-static black poly-sleeve, and lyrics and credits insert. The CD edition is limited to 100, while the vinyl edition is limited to 150 editions.
