‘Follow Instructions’ is a song written by Gustavo Santaolalla, who’s an Argentine phenomenon that still thrives today. The song was loads of fun to play live and sadly when Wet Picnic ended, it was never recorded.

The recording of this version was accidental and obviously, meant to be.
Jerry Angel (drums) had heard WP play it live so I showed Enoch, who’s a fast learner, the chords. We jammed on the rhythm as a warm up while John X was getting the sound balance. To my surprise, he recorded it.

When it was time to do the vocals I remembered most of the lyrics and Gustavo agrees, I might have made some of them up. Fun either way!

When I heard ‘Donut Man’ on the ‘Georgie Fame’ album, I loved it immediately. I learned it, played it at parties and for friends back in Sydney. It wasn’t until years later in Los Angeles, while riding the bike in Santa Monica, I was pulled over by the Highway Police for taking a ‘too wide right hand turn’. Them bastards gave me a ticket. Ooo…I rode off steaming and since cops hang out by donut stores for donuts and coffee, I don’t know why the whole song revealed itself out of that anger. I heard it in my head just the way it sounds on the recording.

I wrote and recorded this song in 2016. It was intended for a film (that I was ultimately fired from, lol). The song is very easy to play, as I tried to pick the low hanging fruit and not outsmart myself. This was especially important as the score had be in under a deadline.

The opening guitar riff was initially only played once or twice in the piece. The music coordinator for the film jumped on a phone call with me, and asked me to come up with a version that used that riff throughout. I thought that was pretty astute. Gosh, that guy is probably more responsible for writing this song than I am!

This song's title "When I Sleep Your, Eyes Close" is derived from Pablo Neruda's poem, Sonnet XVII. The song (and poem) signifies a love that is so pure, unconditional, and natural -- that it feels like an inherent part of oneself. It's how I feel about my wife, and my son. I am them -- they are me.
