Akira (1988) is an undisputed anime classic, that much is true.  But it also pretty much ruined all other anime for us by setting the bar so ridiculously high.  Akira is a pure adrenaline rush, an epic visual feast about armageddon and rebirth that set the bar way too high.  And nothing since (not even Miyazaki) has come close in terms of pure scale, tone and world-building.  It is the perfect blend of sound and image that defies any simple description, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.  Plus, it makes us yell Kaneda! at the top of our lungs every single time. Watch it, then listen to us talk about watching it.  Rinse.  Repeat.

Sometimes I think that I can draw energy from love to fight sadness and anger, knight of love, in all modesty in a world between reality and thoughts, where real feeling comes together without compromise, somewhere where doubt does not exist, things that are best to keep to myself not to be accused of being a fantasist because I didn't make it up myself, it happened to me and yet it manifested itself from my thoughts. 

It is not so much that I feel special, but that I am open and surrender myself to forms other than reality, because what is reality, a created form of living together that works for everyone, a foundation that everyone clings to and to which If you deviate too much from the rules and do not cooperate, you will be punished. It is up to everyone to find their place and it always comes down to what we really want. Peace and love, loving to see and being loved. Rest and living in a harmonious balance between all the contradictions we experience, every person is different in their own way and sometimes it seems unattainable, but if that is your faith then it can become your God and religion becomes something personal, something of yourself and you can share your energy with goodness but not with preaching. Amen.

EXTRA ALCHEMY live mix from the Institute of Contemporary Art & Radio Coyote takeover of Central On Air in Cambridge, MA.
This mix is the fourth in the series that I started fifteen years ago to showcase music from the murk that wasn’t created for a horror/thriller film score, but possesses the same acousmatic qualities.

Pocketknife began throwing parties as a teenager in rural Iowa when he befriended DJ Wolf (an original 70s disco and deep house jock who rocked it with Lil' Louis in Chicago). He then honed his craft with Theo Parrish (Sound Signature) while the two were in art school together.  Production was inevitable, as Pocketknife started to make tracks while splitting time between Detroit and Switzerland.  Now based in Cambridge, MA via Brooklyn, he continues to develop his diverse sound, remixing, DJing and producing with an open ear for a variety of labels and his own imprint, Wilde Calm.
